Product Description
The Wrapped in Diamonds Wrap uses the Argyle Shell Stitch that creates a Spring or Summer Wrap. I was looking for just the right stitch to make this Wrap and when I seen the Argyle Shell Stitch I fell in LOVE!
I used 1000 yards of Comfy Cotton by Lion Brand. Any #3 Lightweight yarn or DK weight yarn can be used to create this Light & Airy wrap.
The Wrap has one size available, but can be customized to make it smaller or larger.
Wrapped in Diamonds Crochet Shawl
Project Overview
Wrapped in Diamonds is an intermediate-level crochet shawl pattern designed by Jo's Crafty Hook. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished wrapped shawl measuring 26 inches wide by 73 inches long when blocked, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a crescent-shaped or wrap-style shawl featuring a geometric diamond motif throughout the design. The shawl is constructed using a repeating pattern that creates visual interest through the strategic placement of diamond shapes across the fabric. The finished dimensions make it versatile enough to wear as a shoulder wrap, shawlette, or decorative garment piece.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 1000 yards of #3 Lightweight Yarn (DK weight)
- Hook: US Hook I or 5.5mm crochet hook
- Additional Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and scissors
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies that 2 full diamonds measure 4 inches in both width and length. The designer notes that gauge is not critically important for this project due to the varying thicknesses commonly found in #3 Lightweight Yarn, making it a forgiving pattern for crafters working with different yarn brands or weights within the DK category.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
This intermediate pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches combined to create the diamond pattern effect:
- Chain (CH): Used to create foundation chains and spacing throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (SC): Provides structure and anchors the pattern repeats
- Double Crochet (DC): Creates height and texture within the diamond motifs
- Slip Stitch (SS): Used for joining and finishing techniques
- Space (SP): Refers to the gaps created by chain stitches, which form the open, airy quality of the shawl
Special Stitch: Shell Stitch
The pattern features a signature Shell stitch that is central to creating the diamond visual effect. The Shell is constructed by working double crochet, chain 1, double crochet, chain 1, double crochet all within the same stitch. This creates a fan-like or shell-shaped cluster that, when repeated across rows, generates the diamond pattern that gives the shawl its name and distinctive appearance.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is built on a repeating sequence with a stitch count that is a multiple of 8 plus 2 stitches. The shawl begins with a foundation chain of 82 stitches, worked in the back bar of the chain for a neat edge. Subsequent rows build upon this foundation using the Shell stitch combined with chain spaces and single crochet stitches to develop the diamond motif. The repeat rows follow a consistent structure that becomes intuitive once established.
Pattern Support and Resources
The Wrapped in Diamonds pattern includes video tutorials to assist crafters with the repeat rows, available in both right-handed and left-handed versions. These supplementary resources help intermediate crocheters visualize the stitch placement and rhythm, reducing confusion and ensuring consistent results throughout the project.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate pattern, Wrapped in Diamonds requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches and the ability to follow multi-row repeats. The pattern is accessible to crafters who have completed several beginner projects and are ready to work with more complex stitch combinations and spatial relationships.
