This can be made by working the short side, or you can make it by working a long starting chain (24 x 12 + 2) and a short width.

Wrapped in Diamonds Crochet Shawl

Project Overview

Wrapped in Diamonds is an intermediate-level crochet shawl pattern designed by Addicted 2 The Hook. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile wrap suitable for various occasions and seasons, depending on yarn fiber choice and weight selection.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crocheted shawl that can be customized in size and drape based on the crafter's yarn weight preference and starting chain length. The shawl features a structured stitch pattern that creates a diamond-like texture, making it an elegant accessory piece.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern offers flexibility with two yarn weight options:

  • Option 1: 1150 metres of #4 medium weight yarn (10 ply) with a J/10-6mm crochet hook. Lion brand Heartland yarn is recommended for this option.
  • Option 2: 1125 meters of fingering weight yarn (4 ply) with a G/6-4.25mm crochet hook. Lola cotton acrylic blend is recommended for this option.

The choice between these options allows crafters to create either a heavier, warmer wrap or a lighter, more delicate shawl depending on their climate needs and personal preference.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques executed in a structured sequence. The primary stitches used include:

  • Fdc (Foundation Double Crochet): A combined foundation and stitch technique that creates the starting row without requiring a separate chain foundation.
  • Ch (Chain): The basic foundation stitch used to create starting chains and throughout the pattern for shaping and stitch spacing.
  • Dc (Double Crochet): The primary stitch that forms the body of the shawl and creates the diamond texture pattern.
  • Sk (Skip): Used to create openwork sections and shape the diamond design by skipping stitches at strategic intervals.

Pattern Construction Options

The pattern provides flexibility in how the shawl is constructed. Crafters can choose to work the shawl by building from the short side or by creating a longer starting chain and working a shorter width. The stitch repeat is based on multiples of 12 stitches plus 2 additional stitches.

For those preferring not to use the foundation double crochet technique, an alternative method is provided: chain in multiples of 12, add an extra 4 chains, then work a double crochet into the 4th chain from the hook and continue with double crochet in each stitch across before beginning row 2 of the pattern.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes the crafter has foundational crochet knowledge including comfort with chain stitches, double crochet stitches, and basic shaping techniques. The structured repeat and clear stitch abbreviations make it accessible to crafters progressing beyond beginner level.

Pattern Notes

The pattern uses standard US crochet abbreviations throughout. Stitch counts provided in the documentation correspond to the 6 x 12 + 2 configuration. Crafters can adjust finished dimensions by modifying the starting chain length according to the multiples specified.
