Wrap Gauntlets by Amy LaRoux
What Is Being Made
The Wrap Gauntlets are multipurpose knitted hand coverings designed to keep hands and wrists warm while offering creative versatility. These gauntlets feature a wrap-style construction that allows wearers to customize how they sit on the wrist and hand. Beyond everyday warmth, they are suitable for cosplay costumes, LARP (live-action role-playing) events, post-apocalyptic themed outfits, and other creative dress-up occasions. The pattern includes two finished size options: a smaller size measuring 3.5" wide with a 7" circumference, and a larger size measuring 4.25" wide with an 8.5" circumference. Both versions are 7.5" in length.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to create the gauntlet structure. The pattern utilizes both circular and straight needle construction methods, giving knitters flexibility in their preferred working style. Stitch markers—including removable stitch markers such as safety pins—are used to track pattern sections and construction points. The gauntlets incorporate yarn overs for decorative or structural elements, and decreases using the knit two together stitch to shape the fabric. The pattern requires working with double-pointed needles (DPNs) for certain sections, likely for shaping the hand or wrist portions of the gauntlets.
Stitches Used
The Wrap Gauntlets pattern uses essential knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate skill level:
- Knit (k) – the fundamental knit stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (p) – used to create texture and reversible fabric sections
- Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative holes or lace elements in the design
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Slip stitch (sl) – used for various construction and finishing techniques
The pattern also references knit-wise and purl-wise slip stitches, as well as working with yarn in front (wyif) and yarn in back (wyib) positions, indicating that the design includes textured or patterned sections requiring precise yarn placement.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Wrap Gauntlets are designed to work with #4 heavy worsted or aran weight yarn, making them an excellent project for knitters who prefer working with substantial, quick-knitting yarns. The pattern requires approximately 150 yards for the smaller size and 170 yards for the larger size—a modest yardage that allows for creative use of single skeins. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Cascade Eco Yarn in color 8019 Antique, demonstrating how the design looks in a neutral, natural-toned yarn.
Construction requires US size 10 needles: a 16" circular needle or straight needles for the main body, plus three double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same size for shaping specific sections. Additional supplies include two removable stitch markers (safety pins work well), a darning needle for weaving in ends, and a gauge of 16 stitches and 21 rows over 4" in stockinette stitch. This gauge ensures proper fit and finished measurements.
Pattern Details
As an intermediate level pattern, the Wrap Gauntlets offer enough complexity to engage experienced knitters while remaining accessible to those with solid foundational skills. The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions, abbreviations, and construction guidance. The wrap-style design is the signature feature, allowing wearers to adjust fit and aesthetic by wrapping the gauntlets around their hands and wrists in different configurations. This adaptability makes them functional for both practical warmth and costume applications.
