Ornament Quilt Pattern by Wendy Sheppard for Windham Fabrics
The Ornament is a free downloadable PDF quilt pattern designed by Wendy Sheppard and published by Windham Fabrics in June 2018. This intermediate-level quilting project produces a stunning 58" x 80" quilt top, making it an ideal size for a generous lap quilt or a lightweight bed throw. The design draws its festive character from the Deck the Halls fabric collection by Rosemarie Lavin Designs, giving the finished piece a rich, holiday-inspired palette perfect for seasonal decorating or gifting.
Design Overview
True to its name, the Ornament quilt features a structured, decorative composition built from a combination of pieced blocks and patch blocks arranged across the quilt top. The layout is unified by vertical sashing strips and framed with an outer border, giving the design a polished, organized appearance. The interplay of pieced geometric units with solid-fabric patch blocks creates visual rhythm and depth, characteristic of intermediate-level quilt construction.
Block Types and Construction
The pattern calls for two primary block categories, each with its own construction method and fabric assignments:
- Pieced Blocks: These are the most complex units in the quilt and are constructed from a wide variety of precisely cut rectangles, squares, and quarter-square triangles. The pieced blocks incorporate fabrics from multiple SKUs, including 50087-7, 50087-4, 50192M-3, and 50192M-4, among others. The variety of sub-cut shapes — ranging from small 1" x 6½" rectangles to 2½" squares and quarter-square triangles — means that careful pressing and accurate seam allowances are essential for clean block assembly.
- Patch Blocks (Block A): Cut from fabric SKU 50087-7, these simpler units are made from 8" x 9½" rectangles and provide visual breathing room between the more intricate pieced sections. A total of six such rectangles are cut from two 8"-wide strips across the width of fabric.
Fabric Assignments by Block Component
The pattern uses a carefully coordinated selection of fabrics from the Deck the Halls collection, each assigned a letter designation for clarity during cutting and assembly:
- Fabric A (SKU 50087-7): The primary workhorse fabric, used for pieced block strips and rectangles, patch blocks, sashing, and the outer border. Requires approximately 4 yards, making it the largest fabric requirement in the pattern.
- Fabric B (SKU 50087-4): Used exclusively for quarter-square triangles within the pieced blocks. Eleven 3¼" squares are cut and then sliced diagonally twice to yield 44 quarter-square triangles. Requires ¼ yard.
- Fabric C (SKU 50190M-1): Contributes three 7½" squares to the pieced blocks. Requires ¼ yard.
- Fabric D (SKU 50190M-2): Contributes five 7½" squares to the pieced blocks. Requires ¼ yard.
- Fabric E (SKU 50191M-1): Contributes four 7½" squares to the pieced blocks. Requires ¼ yard.
- Fabric F (SKU 50191M-3): Contributes four 7½" squares to the pieced blocks. Requires ¼ yard.
- Fabric G (SKU 50192M-3): A multi-purpose pieced block fabric providing 1" x 6½" rectangles, 2½" squares, 1½" squares, and quarter-square triangles. Note that while 12 quarter-square triangles are cut from this fabric, only 10 are used in the final assembly. Requires ¼ yard.
- Fabric H (SKU 50192M-4): Contributes 1" x 6½" rectangles, 1½" squares, 2½" squares, and 3¼" squares (the latter cut for additional triangle units) to the pieced blocks. Requires 3/8 yard, slightly more than the other accent fabrics.
