Westland Sweater in Berroco Arno – Knitting Pattern by Amy Christoffers

The Westland Sweater is a beautifully crafted pullover designed by Amy Christoffers and knitted in Berroco Arno, a DK-weight yarn. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a classic, colorwork-accented sweater with a relaxed, wearable silhouette. With nine sizes available and a recommended positive ease of 2–4 inches (5–10 cm), the Westland is designed to fit a wide range of bodies comfortably and flatteringly.

What Is Being Made

The finished garment is a stranded colorwork pullover sweater worked seamlessly from the top down in the round. It is a full-length sweater with finished bust measurements ranging from 35 to 64 inches (89 to 162.5 cm) and a center back length ranging from 21 to 24 inches (53.5 to 61 cm) depending on size. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 40¼ inches / 102 cm.

Construction Techniques

  • Top-down construction: The sweater is begun at the neckline and worked downward, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they go and make fit adjustments before finishing.
  • Worked in the round: The body and sleeves are knitted circularly, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, continuous fabric.
  • Stranded colorwork: Two colors are carried simultaneously across rounds to create patterned motifs. This technique, sometimes called Fair Isle or two-color stranded knitting, requires managing yarn tension carefully to keep the fabric even and the floats neat on the wrong side.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, creating a smooth knit surface that showcases the colorwork pattern beautifully.
  • Additional ribbing or edging stitches are typical for top-down seamless sweaters of this construction style, used at the cuffs, hem, and neckline to provide a tidy, elastic finish.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Berroco Arno, a DK-weight yarn sold in 50-gram balls. Two colors are used:

  • #5097 Regatta — the Main Color (MC), required in (7, 8, 9) [9, 10, 12] {13, 13, 13} balls depending on size
  • #5002 Cream — the Contrast Color (CC), required in (2, 2, 3) [3, 3, 3] {3, 4, 4} balls depending on size

The recommended gauge is 21 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper sizing.

Needles and Notions

  • Circular needles: Both 16-inch / 40 cm and 32-inch / 80 cm lengths are required, in sizes US 4 / 3.5 mm and US 6 / 4 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Double-pointed needles (DPNs): One set each in sizes US 4 / 3.5 mm and US 6 / 4 mm, used for working the sleeves in the round
  • 1 stitch marker for tracking round beginnings
  • Waste yarn for holding sleeve stitches while the body is completed

Skill Level and Suitability

The Westland Sweater is rated Intermediate in difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with working in the round on both circular and double-pointed needles, reading stranded colorwork charts,
