Product Description
Cute little coin pouch that doubles up as a crochet keychain. It is big enough to hold your change but not too big to hang onto your keys!
It measure 5 x 7 cm and has a cute little zipper closer. I added a leather strap and a key ring but this is optional.
I used scraps of aran weight yarn and 4 mm crochet hook to minimise the holes. You will only need @ 20 m of yarn.
Wedge Coin Pouch Keychain by Veronika Cromwell
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern from Blue Star Crochet provides instructions for creating a practical wedge-shaped coin pouch keychain. The finished accessory measures 5 cm wide by 7 cm long, making it an ideal size for carrying small coins, keys, or other pocket essentials. The design combines functionality with portability, suitable for everyday use or as a handmade gift.
What You'll Create
The Wedge Coin Pouch Keychain is a structured, three-dimensional pouch featuring a zippered opening and optional leather handle attachment. The wedge shape provides visual interest while maximizing storage capacity for its compact size. A keyring component allows for easy attachment to bags, belts, or keychains.
Crochet Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques accessible to those new to the craft:
- Foundation chain – The pattern begins with a foundation chain that serves as the base structure
- Working into both sides of the foundation chain – Stitches are worked into both the main foundation chain and its underside, creating dimensional fabric from the start
- Spiral rounds – The keychain is constructed by working in continuous rounds without closing off each round, creating a seamless spiral effect
- Marker placement – A stitch marker is used to track the beginning of each round, making pattern progression easy to follow
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes three essential crochet stitches (US crochet terms):
- Chain stitch (ch) – Creates the foundation and openwork elements
- Single crochet (sc) – The primary stitch providing structure and density to the fabric
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining and finishing details
Materials Required
The pattern calls for aran weight yarn (also known as worsted weight), specifically recommending Women's Institute Smooth and Silky yarn in brown and cream. This 100% acrylic yarn offers durability and easy care. The pattern specifies 660 meters per 400g ball, though any aran weight yarn in your chosen colors will work equally well.
Additional materials include:
- 4 mm crochet hook – Appropriately sized for aran weight yarn
- 5 cm zip – Hand-sewn into the pouch opening in the opposite direction to the foundation chain
- Keyring – Attached to complete the keychain functionality
- Leather for handle (optional) – An optional embellishment for added durability and aesthetic appeal
Tension and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 10 stitches by 11 rows measuring 5 by 5 centimeters. Achieving this tension ensures your finished pouch matches the intended dimensions of 5 cm wide by 7 cm long. Checking tension before beginning is recommended for accurate sizing.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, this pattern is ideal for crocheters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, satisfying make. The straightforward stitch selection, clear spiral construction method, and compact finished size make this an excellent confidence-building project that produces a useful, giftable item.
