This series we're playing with borders so that you can discover new ways to add an edge to your own projects.

Washcloth 6 – Series 2 Crochet Pattern by Seona Roberts
What Is Being Made
Washcloth 6 – Series 2 is a beginner-friendly crochet washcloth designed as part of a series focusing on decorative borders. This square washcloth measures 34cm x 34cm (approximately 13.4 inches x 13.4 inches) and features an adaptable border technique that works with varying stitch counts, making it accessible for crocheters of different experience levels. The design emphasizes border versatility, allowing crafters to apply the techniques to other projects beyond washcloths.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The core stitches include:
- Slip Stitch (ss) – used for joining and finishing techniques
- Chain Stitch (ch) – the foundation stitch for creating the base of the washcloth
- Single Crochet (sc) – a basic short stitch providing structure and density
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch offering versatility in the pattern
- Double Crochet (dc) – a taller stitch used for creating texture and visual interest, particularly in the border
The pattern notes indicate a fairly simple but pretty border design that prioritizes adaptability. The border construction does not require an overly specific stitch count, meaning slight variations in your foundation chain length will not compromise the final result. This flexibility makes the pattern forgiving for beginners who may struggle with precise stitch counting.
Materials and Tools
The washcloth is constructed using 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight (also referred to as 10ply or aran weight). The designer recommends Knit Picks Dishie as a suitable yarn choice, though any 100% cotton worsted weight yarn will work. Approximately 120g of yarn is required to complete this project. A 5mm crochet hook is specified for this pattern. Additionally, a needle for weaving in ends is necessary to finish the washcloth neatly.
Pattern Customization Options
The design offers flexibility for crafters who wish to adjust the finished size. You can modify dimensions by either selecting a different yarn weight (lighter or heavier than worsted) or by adjusting the length of the initial foundation chain. These adaptations allow you to create smaller or larger washcloths while maintaining the border design integrity.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Rated as a beginner-level project, Washcloth 6 – Series 2 is ideal for those new to crochet or seeking a straightforward, satisfying make. The pattern uses only basic stitches and emphasizes border techniques that are described as easy to adapt to any project, making this an excellent learning opportunity for understanding how borders can enhance various crochet creations.
