Product Description

With Mom, Dad and 3 brothers a lot of times we had leftovers or “warm ups" for dinner. It was actually one of my favorite dinners, right after cereal suppers! This is an easy sock, sized for children and adults. It is knit from cuff to toe with a “slouch style" pattern. This is a great pattern for self striping yarn or even "leftovers" of yarn. When left unblocked the pattern has an “accordion" look. The adult photo shows the top unblocked and the child's sock is blocked flat so you can see the pattern.

Soooooo......warm up some leftovers and you’ll have more time for knitting! Thank you for looking at my project.

Must knit now,

Phyll

Warm Ups Socks by Phyll Lagerman

Project Overview

Warm Ups is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern designed by Phyll Lagerman, inspired by childhood memories of family dinners. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a charming cuff-to-toe sock design available in both children's and adult sizes. The pattern features a distinctive "slouch style" construction that creates an accordion-like appearance when left unblocked, adding visual interest and texture to these cozy foot garments.

What You'll Create

This pattern yields a pair of slouch-style socks with a relaxed, textured aesthetic. The design works beautifully in a range of yarn colors and can be customized by using different leftover sock yarn colors for each pattern repeat, creating a fun, multi-colored effect. The children's version, when blocked as shown in the pattern photographs, presents a more refined appearance while maintaining the characteristic slouch styling.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The socks are constructed using the cuff-to-toe method, a traditional approach that begins at the leg opening and progresses downward to the foot. This technique allows for easy customization of sock length and provides a natural progression for knitters. The pattern employs a slouch style construction that naturally creates texture and dimension without requiring complex stitch manipulation.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the pattern, creating a smooth, classic fabric base
  • Pattern repeats that generate the distinctive accordion texture when left unblocked

Materials and Specifications

  • Yarn weight: Sock or fingering weight (4-ply)
  • Yarn quantity: Approximately 275 yards for children's sizes; approximately 400 yards for adult sizes
  • Needles: US 2 double pointed needles (or size needed to achieve proper gauge)
  • Gauge: 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch

Pattern Notes

This pattern encourages creative yarn use by suggesting leftover sock yarn for each pattern repeat, making it an excellent project for stash busting. The slouch style creates an accordion look when the socks remain unblocked, offering a casual, textured aesthetic. Blocking the finished socks, particularly the children's version, refines the appearance while maintaining the slouch silhouette. The pattern uses double pointed needles with a tail marker system to indicate the beginning of each round, a traditional method for circular sock knitting.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic knitting techniques including casting on, working in the round with double pointed needles, and maintaining consistent gauge. The straightforward construction and lack of complex stitch patterns make it accessible to knitters progressing beyond beginner level.
