Product Description
**~Warm Mittens Crochet PATTERN~**
I have made this adult mitten pattern so that even a beginner would have success. The mitten dimensions are: ~8 3/4" (tip to bottom of cuff) x 4". The pattern was written for a size Medium woman's hand, however, I give instructions on where to increase or decrease for the perfect fit. These mittens are perfect for everyday use. They would also make a wonderful gift! Bonus...they whip up in only a few hours!!! The best part about this pattern...the final product can be worn on either hand. That's right! You just make two of the same mitten. It can't get much easier. I have provided pictures to guide you.
Warm Mittens Crochet Pattern by A Frayed Knot Boutique
Project Overview
The Warm Mittens pattern, designed by Tracy Phillips for A Frayed Knot Boutique, offers a practical solution to a common crochet challenge: creating a pair of mittens without requiring two separate patterns. This downloadable crochet pattern features a single mitten design that you work twice to complete a matching pair. The pattern is specifically engineered for accessibility, making it suitable for beginners while remaining engaging for intermediate crocheters.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of warm mittens designed for comfort and everyday wear. The mittens are worked in bulky yarn weight, creating a thick, insulating fabric ideal for cold weather. The pattern demonstrates versatility through the designer's sample projects, which showcase the mittens in different yarn combinations and colorways, allowing crafters to customize their finished mittens based on personal preference and available materials.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Warm Mittens pattern incorporates several intermediate crochet techniques to create structure and texture:
- Post stitches: The pattern utilizes both front post half double crochet (fphdc) and back post half double crochet (bphdc) stitches, which create dimensional ribbing and texture by working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops
- Invisible decreases: The pattern employs invisible half double crochet decrease (inv hdc dec) and invisible single crochet decrease (inv sc dec) techniques to create seamless shaping and a polished finished appearance
- Magic circle method: The pattern begins with a magic circle (mc), a popular technique for starting projects in the round without a visible hole in the center
- Working in the round: The mittens are constructed using circular crochet techniques, as indicated by the inclusion of a round/row counter in the materials list
Stitches Used
The pattern employs a focused selection of fundamental crochet stitches combined with post stitch variations:
- Single crochet (sc): A basic short stitch used for structure and shaping
- Half double crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch that forms the primary fabric of the mittens
- Front post half double crochet (fphdc): Creates textured ribbing by working around the front post of stitches
- Back post half double crochet (bphdc): Creates textured ribbing by working around the back post of stitches
- Chain (ch): Used for foundation and turning
- Slip stitch (slst): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Invisible decreases: Both invisible half double crochet decrease and invisible single crochet decrease techniques minimize visible decrease lines for a professional finish
Materials and Tools
Hook: The pattern calls for an I (5.5mm) crochet hook, appropriately sized for bulky yarn weight.
Yarn: The pattern uses bulky weight yarn, specifically weight category (5). The designer's samples demonstrate the pattern's versatility with different yarn compositions:
- Sample 1: Yarn Bee Arabella in colorway Foxtrot Fella, a cotton/acrylic blend (2 skeins recommended for color matching across transitions)
- Sample 2: Buttercream Luxe Craft Angel Hair in colorway Black & White, an acrylic/nylon/wool blend (1¼ skeins used)
Additional supplies: The pattern requires a stitch marker for tracking position, a round/row counter for tracking progress (optional), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Pattern Advantages
The Warm Mittens pattern addresses a common frustration in mitten crochet patterns by providing a single pattern that works for both mittens, eliminating the need to reverse or mirror instructions. This streamlined approach makes the pattern more user-friendly and reduces the potential for confusion. The intermediate difficulty level and beginner-friendly design philosophy ensure that crafters with varying experience levels can successfully complete this project.
