Product Description

This versatile lace cowl is knit in one piece in the round, with the main body being worked in a simple garter stitch lace, edged with an easy ribbed border. Since both stitches are reversible, there is no right or wrong side or top or bottom edge.

Due to the interaction between the stitch patterns, the cowl will bias very strongly before blocking. Even with aggressive blocking, a certain amount of bias will remain.

This pattern is designed for a single-ply yarn with long, slow color transitions, such as Knit Picks Chroma or Crystal Palace Yarns Mini Mochi. Designed for smaller circumference items such as socks, these tend to produce definite, hard-edged stripes when worked in long rows. Working alternate rows with the head and tail of the yarn ball subtly blends the colors and mutes the stripe edges.

Special techniques are used for the cast on and bind off because it is important that they are firm, but stretchy and resemble one another.

Charts and written instructions are provided.

This pattern has been tech edited and test knit.

Waltz Lace Cowl by Carla Cuadros

What is Being Made

The Waltz Lace Cowl is a versatile, reversible lace cowl designed by Carla Cuadros. This one-piece cowl is knit seamlessly in the round, making it a practical accessory that can be worn with either side facing outward due to its reversible construction. The cowl features a thoughtful combination of stitch patterns that create visual interest while maintaining ease of execution.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This cowl is worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, professional finish. The design employs special cast-on and bind-off techniques that contribute to the reversible nature of the finished piece. An important characteristic of this pattern is the bias created by the interaction between stitch patterns—the cowl will bias noticeably before blocking, and even with aggressive blocking, some bias will remain as an inherent design feature rather than a flaw.

A clever construction technique is employed when working with the yarn: alternating rows are worked with the head and tail of the yarn ball. This method subtly blends the color transitions and mutes the stripe edges, creating a more cohesive appearance than working continuously from one end of the ball.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch lace for the main body—a simple, beginner-friendly stitch pattern that remains reversible
  • Ribbed border for the edging—an easy, reversible stitch that frames the cowl
  • Yarn over (yo) stitches, which create the lace openwork characteristic of the design
  • Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as foundational elements
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) decreases to shape the lace pattern

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for lace-weight yarn. The pattern notes specifically reference Knit Picks Chroma-Fingering, a single-ply yarn characterized by long, slow color transitions. This yarn type is engineered for smaller circumference projects such as socks, and its color-work properties are particularly relevant to this design. When worked in long rows, Chroma-Fingering tends to produce definite, hard-edged stripes; however, the alternating yarn-end technique described above mitigates this effect, creating softer color blending.

Circular needles are required for working this cowl in the round. The specific needle size is not detailed in the provided content, but lace-weight projects typically use needles in the US 0–3 range.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to lace knitting. The garter stitch lace and ribbed border are both straightforward stitch patterns, and the in-the-round construction eliminates the complexity of managing multiple pieces. Beginners should note that while the stitches themselves are simple, the bias behavior of the finished cowl is an intentional design feature that may appear unusual before blocking.
