Product Description
Lapping waves, like the ocean sweeping onto the a beach at sunset, drift along the length of the Virtual Sunset Scarf.
This garter stitch scarf is worked lengthwise and relies upon simple increases and decreases to create its wavy lines. To make the scarf longer or shorter, add or subtract a multiple of 18 sts. To adjust the width, repeat the main pattern more or fewer times.
The sample was knit using a gradient mini-skein set, but the scarf could also be worked in a solid or variegated colorway, or with alternating stripes of yarn.
Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but using a different weight yarn or needle size will affect the size of the finished scarf and the amount of yarn needed.
Virtual Sunset Scarf by Emily Wood
What is Being Made
The Virtual Sunset is a long, flowing scarf designed by Emily Wood that measures approximately 65 inches (165 cm) in length and 10.5 inches (26.5 cm) in width. This knitted accessory features a distinctive wave pattern inspired by ocean waves at sunset, creating a dynamic visual effect that runs the length of the finished piece.
Knitting Techniques Used
This scarf employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The design is worked lengthwise, meaning you knit along the longest dimension of the scarf rather than casting on all stitches at once. The wave pattern is created through simple increases and decreases strategically placed throughout the knitting process. The scarf is worked primarily in garter stitch, which is one of the most basic and forgiving knitting stitches. Blocking is recommended after completion to enhance the wave definition and achieve the proper finished dimensions.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Garter Stitch forms the foundation of this design, creating a textured, reversible fabric
- Increases and Decreases are used strategically to form the lapping wave pattern along the scarf's length
- Gauge is 25 stitches by 39 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch waves after blocking, though exact gauge is noted as not critical since variations will affect finished size and yardage requirements
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Approximately 800 yards (732 meters) of fingering weight yarn is required. The sample shown uses Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply Toes, a 100% superwash merino yarn that comes in a 6-skein gradient set called Carmen, providing approximately 798 yards (726 meters) total from 1.3 ounces (38 grams) per skein.
Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring at least 50 inches (120 cm) in length are required to accommodate the large number of stitches worked lengthwise.
Notions: A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends upon completion.
Beginner-Friendly Design Notes
The Virtual Sunset scarf is classified as a beginner project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft. The pattern relies on basic garter stitch and simple shaping techniques rather than complex stitch patterns or color work. The designer provides helpful tips for managing the large number of stitches involved in lengthwise knitting, including suggestions for using stitch markers to track progress and maintain accuracy throughout the project.
