Product Description

The Vintage RAF Pilot Tea Cosy is the perfect cosy for people who enjoy going to vintage show and airdays; this stirling knitting pattern makes this wonderful tea cosy of a vintage pilot.

The pilot tea cosy has all the stereotypical flight gear, an aviation hat, flying goggles, a scarf and a sheepskin jacket. For a bit of fun, his goggles can be raised or lowered over his eyes; Perfect for when he's going in!

Flying above him, by aid of a bamboo knitting needle is an old fashioned biplane which can be turned to point in any direction. I thought it would be really quirky to add an old style aircraft on the tea cosy. The plane is great fun to make and helps to give the cosy a vintage feel.

I love his handlebar mustache, it just gives him lots of character.

The pattern will be available for digital download as soon as you have completed purchase, so you could start knitting him very soon!

This product is the knitting pattern only to make your own Vintage RAF Pilot tea cosy.

Vintage RAF Pilot Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a Vintage Fighter Pilot Tea Cosy, designed by TeaCosyFolk. The tea cosy is sized to fit a 2 pint teapot and features a charming vintage RAF pilot theme. This intermediate-level project combines colorwork and embroidery techniques to create a decorative and functional tea cosy with character and nostalgic appeal.

Craft and Techniques Used

The Vintage RAF Pilot Tea Cosy is created using knitting as the primary craft. The pattern employs multiple knitting needles of varying sizes to achieve different fabric densities and construction stages. Colorwork techniques are incorporated throughout the design to build the vintage pilot aesthetic. Embroidery is used to add fine details, specifically for creating facial features using black DK yarn. The pattern also includes instructions for working with double thickness yarn, where specific yarn balls are divided and knitted as a single strand to achieve desired fabric weight and structure in particular sections.

Stitches and Construction

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names, the pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate-level project. The construction involves multiple needle sizes—5.5mm (UK size 5 / US size 9), 4.00mm (UK size 8 / US size 6), and 3.25mm (UK size 10 / US size 3) needles—suggesting the pattern uses different gauges for various components. A 3.5mm bamboo needle (23cm long) is also included for specific construction elements. The combination of these needle sizes indicates shaping, ribbing, and detailed work throughout the piece.

Materials and Yarn

The Vintage RAF Pilot Tea Cosy pattern calls for DK weight yarn, utilizing multiple colors to achieve the vintage pilot design. The yarn palette includes:

The pattern specifies that King Cole Cuddles DK Caramel and Walnut yarn balls should be divided into two balls for use as double thickness yarn where the pattern indicates.
