Product Description
Knitted gloves in vintage style
I’ve a faible for vintage style and especially designing knitted gloves in vintage style.
The pattern itself I’ve worked a lot with the fit of the glove, and it’s especially, after my opinion at least, the way the thumb is made has a lot to say about how nice the gloves are to wear. The pattern is described in details and there are added photos and a video tutorial for how to cross the stitches without a cable needle.
On a knitting scale from one to three, where one is easy and three is difficult, I will rate it as a two.
Yarn and needles I use needles 2.5 mm - US 1.5 and yarn is a light fingering yarn Gauge is 33 sts and 44 rows = 10 cm or 2.5 inches
Vintage Gloves: Columbine
What is Being Made
The Vintage Gloves: Columbine is a knitted glove pattern designed in a classic vintage style. This downloadable PDF pattern from designer Birgitte Petersen offers two sizes: Ladies and Children (ages 5-7 years). The gloves feature a distinctive diamond stitch motif that creates an elegant, timeless aesthetic suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The gloves are worked in the round using double-pointed needles, a traditional technique that allows for seamless construction of cylindrical garments like gloves. The pattern begins with a cuff section that can be adjusted to the desired length before transitioning into the main body with the decorative diamond stitch pattern.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes stocking stitch as the foundational stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. The signature design element is the diamond stitch, which is worked into the main body of the gloves to create visual interest and texture. The pattern requires careful stitch distribution across four double-pointed needles, with needles one and two dedicated to the diamond stitch pattern and needles three and four managing the remaining stitches during construction of the fingers and thumb.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Vintage Gloves: Columbine pattern calls for 100% merino wool from Kaos yarn, a premium organic fiber choice. The yarn weight is 4-ply, which provides excellent drape and wearability for fitted garments like gloves. The pattern requires only 1 skein of yarn for either size (Ladies or Children). Knitting is worked on 2.5 mm (US 1.5) double-pointed needles, which are essential for working in the round. Additional materials needed include stitch holders for managing stitches during thumb and finger construction.
Gauge and Sizing Information
The recommended gauge is 33 stitches and 44 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) when worked in stocking stitch using 2.5 mm needles with the specified 100% organic merino wool from Kaos yarn. The pattern provides flexibility for yarn substitution, provided that an alternative yarn can achieve the same gauge. If gauge does not match, the pattern recommends adjusting needle size accordingly—using smaller needles for tighter gauge or larger needles for looser gauge. The Ladies size requires 52 stitches distributed evenly across the four needles, while the Children size uses 44 stitches.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic skills. The combination of working in the round with double-pointed needles, managing multiple stitches across four needles, and executing the diamond stitch pattern requires intermediate-level proficiency and attention to stitch placement and tension.
Design and Quality Assurance
The Vintage Gloves: Columbine pattern is designed and copyrighted by Birgitte Petersen and has been quality assured by Tina B. Henriksen, ensuring accuracy and clarity in the instructions provided in the downloadable PDF format.
