Vesterhav Women's Knit Sweater by HelstrupDesign
What Is Being Made
Vesterhav is a women's knit sweater named after the Danish North Sea. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXXL, with finished chest measurements from 101 centimeters to 142 centimeters and lengths from 56 to 63 centimeters. The design accommodates a wide range of body types and fit preferences, making it an inclusive pattern for knitters of varying proportions.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is an advanced-level knitting project created by independent designer HelstrupDesign. The sweater is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which allow for seamless or minimal-seam construction. The pattern requires working in the round on circular needles, a method favored by experienced knitters for creating smooth, professional-quality garments with efficient construction.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch used throughout Vesterhav is stockinette stitch, a fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows. Stockinette produces a smooth, classic appearance with a distinctive V-pattern texture on the right side. The pattern specifies a precise gauge of 25 stitches and 35 rows per 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch, which is critical for achieving the intended finished measurements and proper fit.
The sweater incorporates contrast color work, requiring knitters to work with both a main color and accent colors. This color blocking or patterning element adds visual interest and demonstrates advanced color management skills typical of intermediate to advanced knitting projects.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn Weight and Fiber Content: Vesterhav is designed for 4-ply and sport weight yarns, which are lightweight to medium-weight options ideal for creating garments with excellent drape and breathability. The pattern specifies yarn with a yardage of approximately 150 meters per 50 grams. Recommended yarn options include Malabrigo Arroyo or Lang Yarns Merino 150, both of which are 100% merino wool. The pattern sample pictured was hand-dyed using natural dyes from Chester Wool Company's Merino 300 yarn, showcasing how the design adapts beautifully to premium, artisanal fiber sources.
Yarn Quantities by Size: Main color yardage ranges from 400 grams for size Small to 650 grams for size XXXL. Contrast colors require significantly less yardage, ranging from 25 to 75 grams depending on the size, allowing knitters to experiment with color combinations without committing to large quantities of accent yarns.
Needles: The pattern requires two 3 millimeter circular needles—one measuring 60 or 80 centimeters for working the body in the round, and one 40-centimeter circular needle (or alternatively, 3 millimeter double-pointed needles) for working the narrower sections such as sleeves or neckline. Circular needles are essential for this project's construction method and allow knitters to work continuously without turning the work.
Additional Notions
Beyond yarn and needles, knitters will need stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends after completing the sweater. These basic notions are standard requirements for most knitting projects.
Pattern Difficulty and Gauge Importance
Classified as an advanced knitting pattern, Vesterhav is suited for experienced knitters comfortable with circular needle techniques, color work, and precise gauge management. The pattern emphasizes that achieving the correct gauge is essential, as every knitter's tension is unique. Knitters are instructed to always select a needle size that produces the specified gauge rather than automatically using a standard size, ensuring that their finished sweater will have the intended measurements and proper fit regardless of individual knitting style.
