Vest Inis by Carolina Speek

What is Being Made

The Vest Inis is an oversized women's vest featuring four beautiful colors, designed as a downloadable knitting pattern by independent designer Carolina Speek. This slipover-style vest combines solid knitting with decorative colorwork, creating a versatile layering piece suitable for intermediate knitters. The pattern is available in three size ranges: S/M, L/XL, and XXL/XXXL, allowing for customization to fit various body types.

Construction Method

The Vest Inis employs a practical bottom-up construction technique worked in the round until the armholes are reached. This approach creates a seamless body with minimal finishing required. Once the armholes are established, the back and front pieces are knitted separately to accommodate shaping. After the main body is complete, the shoulder seams are closed using standard seaming techniques. Stitches are then picked up along the neckline and armholes to add finishing ribbing, a technique that requires careful attention to stitch placement and tension.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern requires proficiency in several key knitting techniques:

  • Fair Isle Knitting: The vest features partial Fair Isle colorwork, a traditional stranded knitting technique where multiple colors are carried across the row to create intricate patterns. This method adds visual interest while building fabric structure.
  • Knitting in the Round: The body is constructed using circular needles to work in continuous rounds, eliminating the need for seaming the body sides and creating a seamless garment.
  • Picking Up Stitches: After the main construction, stitches are picked up along the neck and armhole edges to create neat finishing bands, requiring knowledge of proper stitch pickup ratios and technique.
  • Ribbing: Elastic rib stitching is used at the neckline and armholes for a fitted, professional finish that provides recovery and shape retention.

Materials and Tools

The Vest Inis requires sport weight yarn, a lightweight option that creates drape and breathability ideal for layering garments. The pattern specifies Lana Grossa yarns in four coordinated colors, with exact yardage quantities provided in the pattern chart based on selected size. Two circular knitting needles in size 3.5 mm (US size 4, UK sizes 9-10) are required: one 80 cm (32 inch) needle for working the body in the round, and one shorter 40 cm (16 inch) needle for the smaller circumference of the neckline and armhole ribbing. The specific yarn colors mentioned include Dark Red (Merino Superfein color 585) and Red (Pure Extrafeine), with two additional colors specified in the complete pattern documentation.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Vest Inis is designed for knitters with established foundational skills. Successful completion requires prior experience with Fair Isle colorwork techniques, confidence working in the round with circular needles, and proficiency in picking up stitches for finishing details. Knitters new to these techniques may benefit from practicing each skill separately before beginning this project.
