Veery Dress in Berroco Comfort — Knitting Pattern by Amy Christoffers
The Veery Dress is a charming colorful knitted dress designed by Amy Christoffers for infants and toddlers, sized from 0–3 months through 18–24 months. Published as a downloadable PDF by Berroco, this pattern produces a sweet striped baby dress with a garter stitch bodice and a stockinette skirt worked in the round. It is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it an excellent project for knitters who are comfortable with basic shaping, color changes, and combining flat and circular knitting techniques.
What Is Being Made
The finished garment is a baby and toddler dress with a structured garter stitch bodice and a flowing skirt picked up from the bodice's cast-on edge and worked downward. The dress features a simple button closure at the back neck and colorful stripes created by alternating four yarn colors. Finished chest and waist measurements range from 18 to 21 inches, and finished lengths range from 14¼ to 19¾ inches depending on size.
Construction Method
The construction of the Veery Dress is thoughtfully structured and uses a combination of flat knitting and knitting in the round, making it a great introduction to seamless and hybrid garment construction. The process unfolds in two main stages:
- Bodice: The bodice is worked flat (back and forth) from the waist upward to the neck, entirely in garter stitch. The back and front are shaped separately, with neck shaping worked by binding off center stitches and working each shoulder side individually. Shoulders are then sewn together, and bands are picked up along the side edges of the bodice.
- Skirt: Once the bodice is complete, stitches are picked up along the cast-on edge of the bodice, and the skirt is worked downward in the round in stockinette stitch, creating a bottom-up seamless skirt that grows away from the waist toward the hem. This bottom-up, pick-up-and-knit approach eliminates the need for seaming the skirt entirely.
A crochet hook is also used for finishing details, adding a neat edging or button loop at the back neck closure.
Techniques Used
- Worked flat — the bodice is knitted back and forth in rows
- Worked in the round — the skirt is knitted seamlessly using circular needles
- Bottom-up construction — the skirt grows downward from the picked-up waist edge
- Seamless skirt — no side seams required on the skirt portion
- Stripes — color changes between four named colorways create the striped effect throughout the bodice
- Neck shaping — stitches are bound off at center and each shoulder is worked separately
- Pick up and knit — stitches for the skirt and bands are picked up along existing edges
- Crochet finishing — a crochet hook is used for edging or button loop construction
Stitches Used
- Garter Stitch — used throughout the bodice; worked flat by knitting every row, creating a dense, textured, non-curling fabric ideal for a structured yoke
- Stockinette Stitch — used for the skirt when worked in the round; produces a smooth, classic fabric that drapes well for the skirt portion
Two separate gauges are given: 18 stitches and 40 rows = 4 inches in garter stitch, and 18 stitches and 24 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Checking both gauges is strongly recommended to ensure accurate sizing.
