Utochka Slippers by Olga Beckmann
What is Being Made
Utochka is a downloadable knitting pattern for women's slippers designed by independent designer Olga Beckmann. The slippers are sized for medium women's feet, with finished dimensions of 23–24 cm (9⅛"–9½"). This pattern produces a comfortable, wearable slipper suitable for everyday indoor use.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to move beyond basic techniques. The slippers are worked in the round, which is a fundamental skill for creating seamless, three-dimensional garments.
Stitches and Construction
The Utochka slippers are primarily constructed using Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for comfortable footwear. The pattern employs a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size. The construction method involves working in the round using double-pointed needles, and the pattern includes a provisional cast-on technique, which allows for seamless joining and a polished finish.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Utochka slippers call for Aran weight yarn or worsted weight yarn, with a total yardage requirement of 110–125 yards (100–115 meters) for women's medium sizes. Suggested yarn fiber content includes cotton, cotton/linen blends, or wool/cotton blends—all excellent choices for slippers as they provide breathability, durability, and comfort against the skin. Alternatively, knitters may substitute two strands of fingering weight yarn if preferred.
Needles, Notions, and Tools
- Double-pointed needles (DPNs) in US sizes 2½–3.0 mm, with needle size adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge
- Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and round beginnings
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
- Waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique
- Row counter to track progress through the pattern
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The design is the work of independent designer Olga Beckmann, known professionally as LaKalinka.
