Usus is a loose-fit, comfortable knitted sweater designed with a classic, flattering silhouette. The garment features a structured pattern on the body and sleeves combined with ribbed edges for a polished finish. Available in six sizes ranging from S to XXXL, Usus offers finished chest widths from 107 to 151 centimeters and lengths from 56 to 60 centimeters, making it suitable for a wide range of body types and fit preferences.
This advanced-level knitting pattern employs circular needle construction, a technique that allows for seamless or minimal-seam garment assembly. The sweater is worked primarily in the round using two circular needles of different lengths to manage stitches at various stages of construction. The pattern demonstrates structured shaping on both the body and sleeves, requiring knitters to follow detailed stitch instructions and maintain consistent tension throughout the project.
Usus is designed for DK weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for both the ribbed edges and patterned sections. The pattern recommends yarn with approximately 225 meters per 100 grams, ensuring appropriate drape and fabric weight for the sweater's intended fit.
Suggested yarn options include: UK Alpaca Super Fine DK, Madelinetosh Tosh DK, West Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester Solids, Dale Lerke, or Puna from Drops. The pictured sample was crafted in hand-dyed 100% merino wool from Chester Wool DK (225 meters per 100 grams), showcasing the beautiful color variation possible with natural dyes.
Yarn quantities required: 600–650 grams for size S, increasing to 850–900 grams for size XXXL, accommodating the larger finished measurements of larger sizes.
The pattern emphasizes the importance of achieving the correct gauge with your chosen needle size, as every knitter's tension is unique. Proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements and ensuring the sweater fits as designed.
