Product Description
Ursula Top in Adriafil Spritz – Free Knitting Pattern (Downloadable PDF)
The Ursula Top is a stylish, relaxed-fit knitted top designed to be worked in Adriafil Spritz, a chunky-weight yarn. This free downloadable PDF pattern produces a casual yet eye-catching garment featuring a naturally rolling neckline, rolled armhole borders, playful fringe trim at the lower edge, and optional bead embellishments. The design is available in multiple sizes and is constructed in two main pieces — a back and a front — that are seamed together at the shoulders and sides.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a pullover-style top with a wide, scooped neckline, sleeveless armholes, and a relaxed silhouette. The neckline and armhole borders are intentionally left to roll outward, giving the top a soft, casual aesthetic that suits the chunky, textured nature of Adriafil Spritz yarn. Fringe is tied along the lower edge for a bohemian finish, and beads may be added as an optional decorative detail.
Garment Construction
The Ursula Top is knitted flat in two separate pieces — the back and the front — before being joined. The back and front are worked identically in terms of stitch pattern up to the neckline shaping, where they diverge to create different neckline depths.
- Back neckline: Shaping begins when the work measures 38–39–40 cm, with the center 12–14–18 stitches bound off and each side finished separately. Decreases of 4 stitches are worked 3 times every 2 rows at the neck edge. Shoulders are bound off when the work reaches 42–43–44 cm.
- Front neckline: Shaping begins earlier, when the work measures 34–35–36 cm, with the center 14–16–20 stitches bound off. The front neckline is then shaped more gradually with decreases of 3 stitches once, 2 stitches twice, and 1 stitch four times, every 2 rows, creating a deeper, more refined curve. Shoulders are bound off at the same total length as the back.
Finishing Techniques
Once both pieces are complete, the garment is assembled and finished with several important steps:
- Shoulder seams are sewn to join the front and back at the top.
- A rolled neckline border is created by picking up 90–96–102 stitches along the neck edge using double-pointed needles and working 6 cm in Stockinette stitch, then binding off loosely. The border is left to roll naturally outward.
- Rolled armhole borders are worked by picking up 70–72–76 stitches along each armhole over 42–44–46 cm, with the shoulder seam placed at the center. These borders are also worked in Stockinette stitch for 6 cm, bound off loosely, and allowed to roll.
- Side seams are sewn to close the garment.
- Fringe is tied along the lower edge of the top for a decorative, textural finish.
- Beads may optionally be added to embellish the garment further.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch used throughout the body and all borders
- Neckline shaping – using stepped bind-offs and row-by-row decreases to shape both the back and front necklines
- Picking up stitches – along the neck edge and armhole edges to create integrated borders
- Working with double-pointed needles – used specifically for picking up and working the neckline border
- Loose bind-off – applied to borders to allow the natural roll of the Stockinette stitch to form correctly
