Product Description
Even though these mittens are made for cold weather, they were definitely designed with summer in mind. The sea green color I choose and the long cable knits reminded me of waves in the ocean.
They are cast on at the cuff and worked up to the fingertips. The thumb stitches are held on waste yarn and completed at the end. I included instructions in the pattern on how to do a tubular cast on for the cuff. I find it to be much more comfortable and gives the mittens a nicer finish.
Size: Womens (fits most) 4" across hand, 10" from base of cuff to fingertip, and 2.5" from inside of the thumb to end of thumb
Under the Sea Mittens by Lizzy Knits
Project Overview
Under the Sea Mittens is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Erin Gates of Lizzy Knits. These cold-weather mittens feature ocean-inspired design elements, including a sea green colorway and long cable knit details that evoke the visual movement of ocean waves. Despite their practical winter function, the design aesthetic draws inspiration from summer and coastal themes.
Construction Method
The mittens are constructed using a top-down approach, beginning at the cuff and working upward to the fingertips. The thumb stitches are strategically held on waste yarn during the main mitten construction and completed as a separate step at the end of the project. This method allows for better fit customization and easier stitch management.
Casting On Technique
The pattern features a tubular cast on for the cuff opening. This advanced cast-on method creates a more refined, comfortable edge with superior aesthetic appeal compared to standard cast-on techniques. While the pattern includes detailed instructions for executing the tubular cast on, it is presented as optional—knitters may substitute their preferred cast-on method if desired.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- Cable knits: Long cable patterns form the primary decorative element, creating the wave-like visual effect central to the design
- Tubular cast on: A specialized cast-on stitch that creates a finished, professional-looking cuff edge
- Double-pointed needle knitting: The pattern uses circular construction techniques on double-pointed needles to create seamless, tubular mittens
Finished Measurements
- Hand width: 4 inches across
- Length: 10 inches from base of cuff to fingertip
- Thumb length: 2.5 inches from inside of thumb to end
Gauge and Yarn Weight
The pattern is designed to work at a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over a 4-inch square using US 5 needles. The mittens are worked in DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight that provides good stitch definition for cable patterns while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable wear.
Materials Required
- US 4 double-pointed needles (for ribbed cuff)
- US 5 double-pointed needles (for main mitten body)
- 185 yards of DK weight yarn
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with double-pointed needle techniques, cable stitches, and the tubular cast-on method (or willing to learn it from the included instructions). The pattern is suitable for experienced beginners looking to expand their technical skills or intermediate knitters seeking a satisfying project with visual impact.
Design Features
The Under the Sea Mittens combine functional winter wear with artistic design sensibility. The sea green colorway and undulating cable patterns work together to create a cohesive ocean-themed aesthetic. The use of two needle sizes—smaller needles for the ribbed cuff and larger needles for the body—ensures proper fit and elastic recovery at the wrist while maintaining the correct gauge for the cable pattern definition.
