Product Description
It all starts with tubular cast-on. Once established, the edge stitches appear to grow out of nowhere. Next the 1x1 rib creates an understated border. Then the body. Mostly easy to work stockinette, broken up by reverse stockinette, flanking a slightly spicy cable. The crown is shaped either with a spiral or a quadrant style decrease. You may choose to top it all off with a pom-pom, or leave it plain.
Its a relatively fast and interesting knit. Once the cable is established, that too becomes intuitive. Its Unisex appeal makes it a great gift! I plan on making a bunch to give out during the holiday season. If I run out of recipients: local organizations are always in need of donations of warm winter hats for cold weather.
You may choose to use Lt. Worsted/Worsted or fingering weight held double to construct your hat.
Unassuming Hat by Cinnamon Wright
What Is Being Made
The Unassuming Hat is a unisex knit hat designed by Cinnamon Wright. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a polished, versatile hat suitable for gift-giving. The finished hat measures 20.5–22 inches in diameter and 8 inches in length, making it a classic, comfortable fit for a wide range of head sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern incorporates several key knitting techniques that add both visual interest and structural quality:
- Tubular Cast-On with Waste Yarn: The pattern begins with a polished tubular cast-on method, which creates a refined, seamless edge that lies flat and looks professionally finished.
- Cable Work: A textural cable detail is featured in the hat design, described as "slightly spicy," adding visual depth and dimension to an otherwise simple silhouette.
- Crown Shaping: The hat is worked in the round and shaped at the crown using decreases, transitioning from circular needles to double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the final crown closure.
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic appearance of the hat.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable techniques. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, while cable stitches create the textural interest. The pattern uses 5 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the crown decreases.
Yarn and Materials
The Unassuming Hat is designed to work with worsted-weight and light worsted-weight yarns, requiring 195–210 yards for standard worsted yarn. The pattern also accommodates fingering-weight yarn held double, which requires 390–425 yards.
