Trevi Cowl by Ashley Knowlton

What Is Being Made

The Trevi cowl is a luxurious knitted neck accessory designed by Ashley Knowlton. This cowl features an elegant cascading ruffle detail that flows from a foundation of cables and lace, creating a sophisticated and textured neckwear piece. The finished cowl measures 19.5 inches in circumference and 9 inches in height, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering over various necklines.

Knitting Techniques Used

This cowl incorporates several intermediate knitting techniques that add visual interest and dimension to the finished piece. The primary construction method involves working in the round on circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous pattern work. The design features prominent cable knitting, a technique where stitches are crossed over one another using a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like textures. These cables form the structural foundation of the cowl and provide both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.

The cascading ruffles are created through strategic increases and lace pattern work, allowing the fabric to expand and flow gracefully. The lace pattern creates openwork sections that add airiness and elegance to the design, contrasting beautifully with the solid cable sections. Blocking is recommended after completion to even out the gauge and enhance the drape of the finished cowl.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Trevi cowl utilizes a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches organized into charted patterns:

  • Cable stitches form the primary textural element, requiring the use of a cable needle to manipulate stitch crossings
  • Lace stitches create the openwork sections and contribute to the cascading ruffle effect through strategic yarn overs and decreases
  • Body Chart pattern combines cables and lace in a repeating pattern unit of 26 stitches, allowing for customization of cowl size

The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming. Stitch markers are optional but recommended for tracking pattern repeats and increases throughout the construction.

Yarn and Materials

The Trevi cowl requires approximately 160 yards of lace weight yarn, a delicate yarn category that produces fine, detailed fabric perfect for showcasing intricate stitch patterns. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Posh Yarn Greta 2-ply, a premium yarn composed of 100% softspun cashmere. This particular yarn provides 440 yards per 50-gram skein, offering exceptional softness and luxury against the skin.

The recommended needle size is US 5 (3.75mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches in length, which accommodates the cowl's circumference while allowing for comfortable knitting in the round. Additional materials include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and optional stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats.

Gauge and Customization

The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 26 stitches and 40 rounds measuring 4 inches by 4 inches in the Body Chart pattern after blocking. However, the designer notes that gauge is not crucial to this project, encouraging knitters to experiment with different needle sizes and yarn weights to achieve a fabric texture they prefer. This flexibility makes the pattern accessible to knitters of varying experience levels.

The Trevi cowl can be easily customized in size by adding or subtracting multiples of 26 stitches at the cast-on edge, allowing knitters to create smaller or larger versions. Similarly, the pattern can be worked in different yarn weights to achieve different drape and fabric characteristics. Prior experience with cable knitting will significantly speed up the completion of this project.
