What is Being Made

Traveler's Socks are a pair of mirrored socks designed by Stefanie Bold and worked from the cuff down. These socks feature classic cables running along the instep, with a uniquely constructed gusset that allows the cable patterns to meet each other at one side of the foot. The design is available in four sizes—S, M, L, and XL—with foot circumferences ranging from 20.75 cm to 25 cm (8¼ to 9⅞ inches). The foot length is adjustable, allowing knitters to customize the finished socks to their exact measurements.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several key techniques to create its distinctive structure. The socks are worked in the round using either a set of double-pointed needles, one circular needle with the magic loop technique, or two circular needles—offering flexibility in needle choice. The pattern features classic cable work on the instep, which requires the use of a cable needle to create the twisted stitch patterns. The gusset construction is notable for its unconventional approach, designed so that the cables meet at one side rather than following a traditional gusset shaping method. The wrap and turn technique (abbreviated as w+t) is employed during construction, allowing for short-row shaping in specific areas.

The Traveler's Socks pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable techniques. Stockinette stitch forms the base fabric, providing a smooth, classic appearance. Materials and Yardage

Traveler's Socks are designed to be worked in fingering weight sock yarn, which is a 4-ply yarn weight ideal for creating fitted, durable socks. Yardage requirements vary by size: size S requires 350 meters, size M requires 400 meters, size L requires 460 meters, and size XL requires 520 meters, depending on the desired foot length. Additional materials needed include a 2mm needle size (or the size required to obtain proper gauge), a cable needle for working the cable stitches, and two stitch markers to track pattern placement. The recommended gauge is 34 stitches and 50 rounds per 10 cm (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch.
