Product Description

These bib panties are worked top down in rounds, i.e. from the waist cuff towards the legs. From the leg cut-outs onwards, the front and back parts are worked separately in rows back and forth. There are no seams except for a small seam at the crotch. Those who have mastered the ”Three-needle-bind-off” technique, can use it quite well at this point and do not need to sew together at all.

Trägerbüxchen Knitted Shorts by Mats&Ida

What is Being Made

The Trägerbüxchen is a pair of knitted shorts with shoulder straps designed for babies and toddlers. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Mats&Ida provides instructions for creating classic German-style dungaree shorts in three size options: 1-3 months (56/62 cm), 6-9 months (68/74 cm), and 12-18 months (80/86 cm). The shorts feature adjustable shoulder straps and are designed to be a comfortable, practical garment for young children.

Garment Specifications

  • Width: 22.5 cm (size 1-3 months), 25 cm (size 6-9 months), 28 cm (size 12-18 months)
  • Length with straps: 33 cm (size 1-3 months), 39 cm (size 6-9 months), 43 cm (size 12-18 months)
  • Length without straps: 20 cm (size 1-3 months), 22 cm (size 6-9 months), 24 cm (size 12-18 months)
  • Gauge: 22 stitches in stockinette stitch on size 3.5 needles equals 10 cm

Knitting Techniques Used

The Trägerbüxchen employs a top-down construction method, beginning at the waistband and working downward in the round. The shorts are initially worked in continuous rounds from the ribbed waistband. Once the leg openings are reached, the front and back pieces are separated and worked flat in rows. This hybrid approach combines the efficiency of circular knitting with the shaping flexibility of flat knitting.

The pattern minimizes seaming, requiring only a small seam at the crotch. Experienced knitters can eliminate this seam entirely by using the three-needle bind-off technique, which creates a seamless join between the front and back leg sections.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Trägerbüxchen is stockinette stitch (glatt rechts), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The waistband features ribbing, which provides elasticity and a finished edge at the top of the shorts. The shoulder straps are also worked in stockinette stitch, maintaining visual consistency with the main garment body.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern recommends DK weight yarn for all three sizes, with yardage requirements of 100 to 150 grams depending on the size selected. Suggested yarn options include:

  • Drops Merino Extra Fine (50 g = 105 meters)
  • Sandnes Garn Merinoull (50 g = 105 meters)
  • Drops Cotton Merino (50 g = 110 meters)

These yarn choices offer breathable, soft fibers suitable for delicate baby skin. The pattern also calls for two buttons to secure the shoulder straps.

Needles Required

Knitters will need the following needle sizes to achieve the specified gauge:

  • Circular needle size 3.5 (40 cm length) for working the body in the round
  • Circular needle size 3 (40 cm length) for the ribbed waistband
  • Double-pointed needles (DPN) size 3 or the appropriate needle size to match the gauge

Difficulty Level

The Trägerbüxchen is classified as a beginner-friendly knitting project. The straightforward construction, use of basic stitches, and minimal seaming make it accessible to knitters new to garment construction. The top-down method allows for easy fitting adjustments, and the optional three-needle bind-off technique provides an opportunity for skill development without being required for pattern completion.
