Totally Cabled Hat by Natalia Pleshko
What is Being Made
The Totally Cabled hat is a knitted beanie designed by Natalia Pleshko featuring prominent cable stitch detailing throughout. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted, classic hat available in three sizes to accommodate head circumferences from 20 to 23 inches (50 to 58 cm). The finished hat measures 9 inches (23 cm) in height with circumferences ranging from 16 to 18.5 inches (41 to 47 cm) when laid flat, making it suitable for a range of head sizes from small to large.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This design showcases cable stitch as the primary decorative element, worked in the round to create a seamless construction. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, requiring knitters to work with cable techniques that involve crossing stitches over one another to create the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture. The cable stitch is the featured stitch throughout the hat, providing both visual interest and textural depth. The pattern notes allow flexibility in the crown decreases, permitting knitters to choose between working with four double-pointed needles, five double-pointed needles, or the magic loop method on a longer circular needle for the final shaping stages.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Totally Cabled hat is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates other light worsted weight options. The recommended yarn is Lang Yarns Aymara, a blend consisting of 40% Alpaca, 30% Merino, and 30% Rayon, offering a soft and breathable fiber composition. Yardage requirements vary by size: Small requires 1 skein (148 yards or 135 meters per 50 grams), while Medium and Large each require 2 skeins, with Medium needing 150 to 160 yards (136 to 146 meters) and Large requiring 170 yards (155 meters). Alternatively, any comparable light worsted weight yarn of similar yardage and weight can be substituted.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires US 6 (4 mm) circular needles in a 16-inch length for the main body of the hat worked in the round. For completing the crown shaping, knitters need either a set of double-pointed needles or a 32-inch circular needle for the magic loop method, depending on personal preference. Additional notions include a cable needle for executing cable crosses, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in cable stitch worked in the round, measured slightly stretched. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The three available sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—are designed to fit head circumferences of 20 to 21 inches (50 to 53 cm), 21 to 22 inches (53 to 55 cm), and 22 to 23 inches (55 to 58 cm) respectively.
