Product Description

Seaside rocks are like works of art, weathered into lacelike patterns and delicately shaded with lichen and seaweed. Toscaig captures the overlapping crescents I found on one such rock, with varying hole sizes, stripes and texture adding to the richness of the lace.

Blacker Samite’s silk lends an intense gleam and luxurious drape to this crescent shawl, stretching out as wide as the horizon. Well... almost.

Yarn

The pattern requires light fingering weight or heavy lace weight yarn. It is recommended to chose a soft, warm yarn with a high natural fibre content, which will block well.

Required yardage: MC: 320 m / 350 yds CC1: 240 m / 260 yds CC2: 420 m / 460 yds Sample is made using:

Blacker Yarns Samite, 40% Shetland, 30% Bluefaced Leicester, 20% Silk, 10% Gotland, 460 m / 503 yds per 100g skein.

MC: Iron Hills, 1 skein CC1: Aspens Shiver, 1 skein CC2: Drowsy Flowers, 1 skein

Toscaig Crescent Shawl by Emily K Williams

What is Being Made

Toscaig is an advanced knitted crescent shawl designed by Emily K Williams. Inspired by weathered seaside rocks featuring overlapping crescents and lacelike patterns created by natural lichen and seaweed, this shawl captures the organic beauty of coastal geology. The design incorporates varying hole sizes, stripes, and textured elements that create visual richness and depth throughout the piece.

Design and Construction

The shawl is constructed using a three-color colorwork technique, with a main color (MC) and two contrasting colors (CC1 and CC2). The overlapping crescent motifs are a signature design element, stretching horizontally to create a wide, elegant silhouette reminiscent of the horizon. The combination of lace elements and textured stitching adds complexity and visual interest to the finished garment.

Techniques Used

  • Lace knitting with strategically placed yarn overs to create decorative holes
  • Colorwork knitting using multiple yarn colors to build the crescent and textural patterns
  • Garter stitch construction as the foundation fabric
  • Blocking techniques to enhance drape and stretch the shawl to its full width

Stitches Used

The pattern primarily employs garter stitch as the base construction method, combined with yarn overs to create the lace elements and hole patterns characteristic of the design. The colorwork is achieved through strategic yarn placement to form the overlapping crescent motifs and striped details.

Yarn and Materials

The sample is knitted using Blacker Yarns Samite, a luxury blend comprising 40% Shetland wool, 30% Bluefaced Leicester wool, 20% silk, and 10% Gotland wool. This yarn is available at 460 meters (503 yards) per 100-gram skein. The pattern requires light fingering weight or heavy lace weight yarn with a soft, warm composition and high natural fiber content to ensure proper blocking and luxurious drape.

Yardage Requirements

  • Main Color (MC): 320 meters / 350 yards
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): 240 meters / 260 yards
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): 420 meters / 460 yards

Needles and Tension

This pattern is worked on 4.5 mm circular needles measuring 100 centimeters in length, or the size required to achieve the stated gauge. The recommended tension is 17 stitches and 30 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in garter stitch after blocking. Achieving proper tension is essential for the shawl to block to its intended dimensions and display the lace patterns correctly.

Difficulty Level

Toscaig is classified as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with lace techniques, colorwork, and blocking methods. The combination of multiple techniques and the precision required for proper stitch definition makes this pattern ideal for knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding project.
