What is Being Made
The Together Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Tatyana Stanziále and available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level cowl measures 24 inches (61 cm) in circumference and 8 inches (20.25 cm) in height, making it a versatile neckwear piece suitable for various seasons and styling occasions. The design draws inspiration from the Traveling Double Diamonds Tree of Life motif, originally created by Detroit Knitter as a modified version of Nicky Epstein's Baby Tree Throw pattern.
Techniques and Design Elements
The Together Cowl employs several key knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The primary construction method involves working in the round on circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous pattern development. The designer faced the technical challenge of converting a blanket-based stitch pattern into a cowl shape, requiring careful mathematical calculations and pattern rewriting to simplify the instructions for knitters.
The cowl features the Traveling Double Diamonds Tree of Life stitch pattern, which creates an intricate, textured design. This pattern showcases how decorative cable and traveling stitches can work effectively in a smaller, wearable format when properly adapted from larger projects.
Stitches Used
- Seed Stitch – The primary stitch used throughout the cowl, worked at a gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 cm)
- Traveling Double Diamonds – The signature stitch pattern that creates the Tree of Life motif
- Cable stitches – Incorporated as part of the decorative pattern work
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: 223 yards of DK weight yarn is required for this project. The sample was created using half of a skein of Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly DK (which contains 446 yards total). The sample yarn is 100% acrylic, making this an accessible and affordable option for knitters seeking easy-care fiber.
Needles and Notions: Knitters may choose between US 4 (3.5 mm) or US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles, both sized at 24 inches (51 cm) in length. Additional materials include 3 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, a cable needle for executing cable stitches, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch. The Traveling Double Diamonds pattern and cable work require familiarity with more advanced stitch techniques, though the downloadable PDF format provides written instructions to guide knitters through the process.
