Tiny Santa and Christmas Fairy by Natty Knits

What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern from designer Clare Doornbos creates two small decorative dolls: a Tiny Santa figure and a Christmas Fairy, each approximately 3 inches tall. These charming miniature characters are perfect for holiday decorations, ornaments, or small gift toppers. The pattern includes instructions for both characters in a single design.

Finished Size and Materials

Both dolls are designed to be approximately 3 inches in height. The pattern requires Sport weight yarn (specifically Baby DK yarn), with approximately 20 yards needed for Santa and approximately 10 yards for the Christmas Fairy. Yarn colors include red, green, white, black, and skin tone. Additional materials needed are US size 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles, a tapestry needle for finishing, fiberfill for stuffing, and yarn scraps for embroidering facial features.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 7 stitches and 9 rows per 1 inch in Stockinette Stitch using US size 2 needles. Obtaining the correct gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished size of these tiny dolls.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques:

  • Short Row Shaping: The body of each doll is constructed using short row shaping, a technique that creates three-dimensional form without increasing or decreasing stitches in the traditional manner. Each "yarn forward, turn work" instruction creates a loop of yarn under the stitch. When knitting back over a stitch with a loop beneath it, you must knit into the loop simultaneously with the stitch above it to properly execute this shaping method.
  • Sideways Construction: The body is knitted sideways rather than from bottom to top, allowing for efficient shaping and construction of the doll form.
  • Stitch Markers: Static stitch markers are placed throughout the pattern to indicate the future positions of arms, legs, and Santa's coat details, providing clear reference points during assembly.

Stitches Used

Stockinette Stitch forms the primary fabric of these dolls, creating a smooth, finished appearance suitable for small decorative pieces. The pattern also incorporates embroidery work using yarn scraps and a tapestry needle to add facial features and fine details to both characters.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is best suited for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle short row shaping and small-scale construction. The intricate sizing and shaping techniques require attention to detail and familiarity with more advanced knitting methods.
