Timeless Light Cardigan in Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Fingering – Pattern FW309 by Cheryl Beckerich

The Timeless Light Cardigan (FW309) is a classic, wearable knitted cardigan designed by Cheryl Beckerich and published by Cascade Yarns. Rated Easy in skill level, this pattern is an excellent choice for beginner knitters who are ready to tackle their first garment or for experienced knitters seeking a relaxed, satisfying project. The design is available as a free downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible to knitters of all backgrounds.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a lightweight, feminine cardigan worked in a fingering-weight yarn. The finished garment is designed with a clean, timeless silhouette that suits everyday wear. It is offered in six sizes — XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL — with finished bust measurements ranging from 32.5 inches up to 47.5 inches. The cardigan length measures 21 to 23 inches depending on the size chosen, providing comfortable, mid-torso coverage. The front closure is finished with 7 small snaps and 7 buttons (½ inch or smaller), giving the cardigan a neat, polished look while keeping the front band flat and tidy.

Construction Techniques

The Timeless Light Cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat, seamed method. This traditional approach means the knitter begins at the lower edges of each garment piece and works upward toward the shoulders. Each section — the back, left front, right front, and sleeves — is knitted separately as flat panels, then joined together using seaming techniques. A Three-Needle Bind Off is used at the shoulder seams, a technique that creates a neat, sturdy join by working two sets of live stitches together simultaneously with a third needle. This method produces a clean seam on the inside of the garment and eliminates the need for sewing the shoulders closed separately.

Working flat is a beginner-friendly approach because it allows knitters to clearly distinguish right-side and wrong-side rows, making it easier to track pattern stitches and shaping. Seamed construction also gives the finished cardigan excellent structure and helps the garment hold its shape over time.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch pattern used across the body and sleeves. It is formed by knitting all stitches on the right side and purling all stitches on the wrong side, creating the smooth, classic fabric most associated with knitted garments. The gauge for stockinette is 27 stitches × 34 rows = 4 inches.
  • Seed Stitch – Used for borders and finishing details, seed stitch alternates knit and purl stitches across each row, with the stitches offset on subsequent rows to create a textured, non-curling fabric. Instructions are provided for both even and odd stitch counts. The gauge for seed stitch is 29 stitches × 37.5 rows = 4 inches.
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together) – A right-leaning decrease used for shaping throughout the cardigan.
  • SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) – A left-leaning decrease that mirrors K2tog, used to create symmetrical shaping at armholes and other key points.
  • Kfb (Knit into the Front and Back) – An increase stitch used to add stitches where the pattern requires shaping, such as sleeve increases.
  • Three-Needle Bind Off – A finishing technique used at the shoulders to join live stitches from two needle tips simultaneously, creating a strong and tidy seam.
