Tiger's Eye Hairband by Natalia Prats
What is Being Made
The Tiger's Eye Hairband is a knitted headwear accessory designed by Natalia Prats. This hairband measures 18 inches (46 centimeters) in length and features decorative cable and lace elements. The finished piece is secured with a button closure, making it both functional and stylish for everyday wear.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The hairband is worked flat on straight needles and combines multiple knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The design incorporates cable stitches and pillar openwork lace, creating visual texture and interest throughout the piece.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Tiger's Eye Hairband employs several key stitches and techniques:
- Cable stitches form the structural foundation, including 2/2 RC (right cross), 2/1 RT (right twist), 2/1 LT (left twist), and lace cable variations
- Pillar openwork stitch creates an open, decorative pattern marked with an "x" in the schematic
- Basic knitting stitches including knit (k), purl (p), knit front and back (kfb), purl front and back (pfb), knit 2 together (k2tog), purl 2 together (p2tog), slip stitch (sl), and yarn overs (yo)
- Decrease techniques such as slip, slip, knit (ssk) and pass slipped stitch over (psso) to shape the fabric
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The hairband is worked in Aran weight yarn, which provides structure and drape suitable for a fitted headwear accessory. The recommended yarn is Patons Morocco Aran in a black/bronze mix colorway. This yarn contains a blend of fibers: 44% linen, 26% polyester, 22% polyamide, and 8% acrylic. One 50-gram ball provides sufficient yardage to complete the project.
Tools and Notions
Construction requires 5mm (US 8) knitting needles for working the aran weight yarn at the appropriate gauge. Additional tools include a cable needle for manipulating cable stitches, a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and one button for the closure mechanism.
Skill Level and Gauge
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to work with cables and lace patterns. Gauge is measured in the pillar openwork stitch to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions of the headband.
