Tiger Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

Project Overview

This is an intermediate-level crochet pattern designed by Kerri's Crochet for creating an amigurumi-style tiger. The pattern provides detailed instructions for constructing the tiger's head and body using fundamental crochet techniques. This downloadable PDF includes complete abbreviations, materials lists, and step-by-step row-by-row instructions suitable for crocheters with some prior experience.

What Is Being Made

The Tiger pattern creates a three-dimensional crocheted tiger toy or decorative piece. The design is worked in the round using a magic loop foundation, with the head constructed as the primary component. The pattern uses color blocking with orange, white, and black materials to create the distinctive tiger appearance, including characteristic stripes and facial features.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Magic Loop: The pattern begins with a magic loop foundation, a modern technique for starting projects worked in the round without a visible center hole.
  • Working in the Round: Rows are worked circularly with slip stitches and chain stitches used to join rounds and create seamless transitions.
  • Increasing Stitches: Strategic stitch increases (working multiple stitches into single stitches) create the shaping necessary for three-dimensional form.
  • Color Changes: The pattern incorporates multiple yarn colors to achieve the tiger's orange base, white accents, and black markings.
  • Embroidery Details: Optional embroidery with pink or red cotton thread adds facial features such as a mouth.
  • Assembly: Finished pieces are sewn together using thread and a sewing needle, with ends woven in using a darning needle for a polished finish.

Crochet Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch): Foundation stitch used to begin rows and create turning chains throughout the pattern.
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between rows without adding height.
  • Treble Crochet (tr): The primary stitch used in the head construction, providing height and structure to the piece.
  • Half Treble Crochet (htr): Listed in abbreviations for potential use in other pattern sections.
  • Double Crochet (dc): Listed in abbreviations for potential use in other pattern sections.
  • Double Treble Crochet (dtr): Listed in abbreviations for potential use in other pattern sections.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn in orange, white, and black, available in either cotton or wool fiber. These weights provide good stitch definition for the amigurumi style.

Tools and Notions: A crochet hook (size not specified in provided content), scissors for cutting yarn, thread for sewing pieces together, a standard sewing needle for assembly, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends. Optional embroidery cotton in pink or red enhances facial details.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable working in the round with stitch increases. The magic loop technique and multi-color construction require some prior crochet experience.

Pattern Format

The Tiger pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF file from independent designer Kerri's Crochet. The pattern includes a companion YouTube tutorial video available on the designer's channel, offering visual guidance alongside the written instructions.
