Product Description
This pattern began life as a hat which I knit for a very good friend, during what was a horrible winter for each of us. I finished it just as the first spring leaves came out, a sign that the both of us were nearly through the woods.
Through the Woods Hat by Kate Heppell
What is Being Made
Through the Woods is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Kate Heppell. This pattern was originally created as a personal project for a close friend during a difficult winter season, finished as spring arrived—symbolizing emergence from hardship. The hat carries meaningful personal significance, representing resilience and the passage of difficult times.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project suitable for knitters with intermediate-level skills. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with shaping methods appropriate for hat construction. Knitters will work through the pattern using standard knitting mechanics to create a finished, wearable garment.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates several key stitches and stitch techniques:
- 1x1 Rib: A classic ribbed stitch used for structure and elasticity, particularly suited for hat cuffs and edges
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Knit 4 together (k4tog): A decrease technique that reduces four stitches to one, used for shaping the crown
- Slip, slip, knit (sssk) or pull slipped stitch over (psso): Additional decrease methods for tapering and shaping
Materials and Specifications
The Through the Woods hat is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits efficiently and creates a warm, durable fabric suitable for winter wear. The pattern requires 4mm (US 6) knitting needles and calls for one 90g skein of GEM Squirrel yarn, making this a relatively quick project in terms of yardage.
The gauge is established at 4 stitches per 1 inch in 1x1 rib, which is essential for achieving proper fit and finished dimensions. This moderate gauge combined with aran weight yarn ensures the hat will have good structure and warmth.

This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for immediate use and convenient for following along while knitting.
