Product Description
This earwarmer is part of my Through the Window series, which features this mosaic crochet stitch pattern that resembles a window pane (to me). Don't let it scare you! It's comprised of single crochets, chains and double crochets. While my favorite way to work this technique is with a variegated color underneath, and a solid coordinating color on top, I thought I'd try something a little different by using a tweed on top, and solid on the bottom. There are so many possibilities, even completely solid! Each one only requires a small amount of worsted weight yarn. For the adult small, I used 78 yards in total of Red Heart Super Saver in Aran Fleck and Black. Other good alternatives are Bernat Super Value, Caron One Pound, JoAnn's Big Twist and Hobby Lobby's Crafters Secret.
Through the Window Earwarmer
What is Being Made
The Through the Window Earwarmer is a crocheted headband accessory designed to keep ears warm while maintaining a stylish appearance. This project is part of Alexandra EyeLoveKnots' Through the Window series, which celebrates the distinctive mosaic crochet stitch pattern that visually resembles window panes. The earwarmer is suitable for various head sizes and offers flexibility in finished dimensions based on personal preference and yarn choice.
Craft and Technique
This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method, specifically featuring a mosaic crochet stitch pattern. Mosaic crochet is a technique that may initially seem intimidating to crafters, but the Through the Window pattern demonstrates that it is accessible to confident beginners. The mosaic technique creates visual interest and texture by layering colors strategically throughout the work.
The designer notes that the mosaic crochet stitch pattern is particularly striking when worked with contrasting colors—traditionally a variegated yarn paired with a solid coordinating color. However, the pattern offers creative flexibility, as demonstrated by the designer's choice to work with a tweed yarn on top and a solid color on the bottom. Crafters may also choose to work the pattern in completely solid colors for a more subtle appearance.
Stitches Used
The Through the Window Earwarmer pattern incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Single crochet: Forms the foundation of the mosaic pattern structure
- Chain stitches: Create openings and spacing within the mosaic design
- Double crochet: Used strategically to create overlapping effects and add dimension to the window pane appearance
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Through the Window Earwarmer is designed to work with worsted weight and heavy worsted weight yarns. The pattern requires only a small amount of yarn; for an adult small size, approximately 78 yards of yarn is needed. Crafters should select two coordinating colors or textures to fully realize the mosaic crochet effect, though single-color options are also viable. The pattern includes specific guidance on yarn placement and color work in the pattern notes, including visual references to clarify stitch placement for those new to mosaic crochet techniques.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent introduction to mosaic crochet for crafters who have foundational crochet knowledge. The designer emphasizes that while mosaic crochet may initially appear complex, the Through the Window pattern is structured to be approachable for confident beginners willing to follow the pattern notes carefully.
