Through The Loop Scarf
What Is Being Made
The Through The Loop Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet scarf designed by Ashley Edmonds. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a tapered scarf that measures approximately 37 inches long when laid flat, with a starting width of approximately 17 inches across the widest end. The scarf features a gradual decrease in width, making it an ideal project for those new to crochet who want to practice fundamental techniques while creating a wearable accessory.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs a strategic decreasing technique to achieve its tapered silhouette. The scarf is worked from the widest end and progressively narrows through decreases that occur every fourth row. The decrease method is applied specifically to half double crochet rows, allowing crafters to practice shaping while maintaining the structural integrity of the piece. The pattern uses multiples of 2 plus 1 for its stitch counts, providing a balanced foundation for the design.
Stitches Used
The Through The Loop Scarf incorporates three primary crochet stitches:
- Single Crochet (sc) – Used as part of the stitch sequence to create texture and structure
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, where decreases are strategically placed every fourth row using half double crochet 2 together (hdc2tog)
- Chain Stitches (ch) – Used for foundation and chain spaces (chsp) within the pattern
The pattern notes that the beginning chain-1 does not count as a stitch, which is important for maintaining accurate stitch counts throughout the project.
Materials and Tools
The Through The Loop Scarf requires approximately 330 to 360 yards of yarn in a DK weight (#3 lightweight) or light #4 weight category. The pattern was tested using Sugar Bush Crisp yarn in the colorway Lead. A 4.5mm crochet hook is recommended for this project. Additional materials include scissors, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and a tape measure for checking dimensions and gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern establishes a gauge of 6 rows by 8 stitches over a 2-inch square, which helps ensure proper sizing and drape. Crafters can customize the scarf length by adding additional rows in the sequence pattern; to extend the scarf, add one row each of single crochet and half double crochet, converting the sequence groups from 4 rows to 6 rows. The finished scarf has slight stretch, making it comfortable and versatile for different body types.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner-level pattern, the Through The Loop Scarf is ideal for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to practice shaping techniques. The straightforward decrease method and simple stitch combinations make this an excellent project for building confidence and understanding how to modify garment dimensions through strategic decreasing.
