Product Description
This hat is such a fun hat to make. It uses an I 5.5mm US hook and any #4 worsted weight yarn. I chose I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby.
The skill level is slightly above beginner using the magic ring, front post double crochet, and the crab stitch. Included are several links to tutorials for all of the special stitches and techniques.

What Is Being Made
This Is My Post Hat is a downloadable crochet pattern designed to create a finished hat measuring approximately 8 inches in circumference. The pattern is fully customizable, allowing crafters to easily adjust the length by adding or reducing the number of rows to achieve their desired fit. This makes it suitable for various head sizes and personal preferences.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern is created using the crochet technique, classified as an intermediate-level project. The design incorporates several specialized crochet techniques that add visual interest and texture to the finished hat. Crafters will work with the Magic Circle (also called Magic Ring) to begin the project, which creates a seamless center point for working in the round. The pattern also features Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) stitches, which create raised, textured posts on the fabric by working around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops. An optional finishing detail includes the Crab Stitch as a decorative border, which is a reverse single crochet that creates a finished, rope-like edge.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) – The foundation stitch used to create loops
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, providing a medium height and density
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) – Creates textured raised posts that define the hat's visual pattern
- Slip Stitch (Sl st) – Used to join rounds seamlessly
- Crab Stitch – An optional finishing stitch for the border
Materials and Gauge
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn (also known as #4 weight), which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and structure. The recommended hook size is US I (5.5mm), though crafters should select the hook size that allows them to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern gauge is 9 stitches and 2 rows of Half Double Crochet equals 1 inch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the hat to fit correctly at the finished 8-inch measurement.
Additional materials needed include scissors for cutting yarn, a large needle for weaving in ends, and optionally a stitch marker to help track the beginning of each round. The pattern references I Love This Yarn as the specific yarn used by the designer, though any worsted weight yarn of similar fiber content and yardage will work.
Pattern Notes
The pattern uses standard crochet abbreviations and includes an important notation: the chain-1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch. This is a crucial detail for maintaining accurate stitch counts throughout the project. The pattern is worked in rounds using the Magic Circle technique, making it ideal for crafters familiar with circular construction methods in crochet.
