Product Description
Thea was born out of my curiosity, I wanted to see how a cable pattern and lace weight yarn would work together. As you can see, perfectly! The scarf is worked flat, in one piece, from bottom border to top border. Enjoy!
Gauge: 26.75 sts and 36.5 rows = 10 cm / 4” over Cable pattern on 3.5 mm / US 4 needle.
Sample in pictures made using 2 skeins of mYak Baby Yak Lace yarn, 100% Baby Yak, in Mustard colourway, approx. 50 g / 350 m / 380 yds per skein.

What is Being Made
The Thea Scarf is a flat-knit, one-piece scarf designed by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou. This elegant accessory combines cable and lace techniques in a single garment, worked from the bottom border to the top border. The finished scarf measures approximately 28.75 cm (11.5 inches) in width and 168 cm (67.25 inches) in length when blocked, making it a generous, versatile wrap suitable for various styling options. The designer notes that the scarf's size is adjustable, allowing knitters to customize the finished dimensions according to their preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Thea Scarf employs two complementary knitting techniques that work together harmoniously:
- Cable Knitting: Cable patterns are integrated throughout the design, created using a cable needle to cross stitches over one another. This technique adds textural depth and visual interest to the scarf.
- Lace Knitting: Lace techniques are combined with the cables, creating an openwork effect that showcases the delicate nature of the yarn. The lace pattern repeats across the width of the scarf.
The scarf is worked in a flat construction method, meaning it is knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round, making it accessible for knitters of all skill levels.
Stitches and Pattern Structure
The Thea Scarf uses fundamental knitting stitches combined in a structured pattern repeat:
- Knit (k): The basic knit stitch forms the foundation of the fabric.
- Purl (p): Purl stitches are used to create texture and contrast within the pattern.
- Slip Stitches (sl): Stitches are slipped purlwise to maintain neat edges and create smooth transitions.
- Cable Stitches (cn): Worked using a cable needle, these stitches cross over each other to form the cable texture.
The pattern is organized into 20-stitch repeats across the width (with 3 repeats comprising the full width) and 16-row repeats for the length (with 34 repeats creating the full scarf length). This modular structure allows knitters to easily adjust the scarf's dimensions by adding or removing pattern repeats as desired.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: The Thea Scarf is knitted using mYak Baby Yak lace-weight yarn in the Mustard colourway. This yarn is 100% Baby Yak fiber, a luxuriously soft and breathable natural protein fiber. The project requires 100 grams of yarn totaling approximately 700 meters (760 yards), which is provided in 2 skeins of 50 grams and 350 meters (380 yards) each. Lace-weight yarn is among the finest yarn weights used in knitting, producing delicate, intricate fabric with excellent drape.
Needles: The pattern calls for 3.5 mm (US 4) needles or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. Needle size may be adjusted slightly depending on individual knitting tension to achieve the designer's intended fabric density and finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
The Thea Scarf is rated as a beginner-friendly project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to cable and lace techniques. Despite combining two advanced-looking stitch patterns, the straightforward flat construction and clear pattern repeats make this design approachable for those building their knitting skills.
