The Weekend Pullover by Vanessa Cayton
Project Overview
The Weekend Pullover is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Vanessa Cayton for knitters seeking a versatile, comfortable sweater. This downloadable PDF pattern offers eight finished sizes ranging from XS to 4X (30" to 58" bust circumference), making it accessible for a wide range of body types. The designer recommends laying a favorite sweater flat to measure the desired finished size, as this pullover is designed to be worn with a loose, relaxed fit rather than a fitted silhouette.
What Is Being Made
The Weekend Pullover is a classic pullover-style sweater featuring cable knit patterning. The garment is constructed using worsted weight yarn and is suitable for everyday wear, offering both comfort and visual interest through its cable stitch details.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate project incorporates several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
- Cable knitting: The pattern features cable stitches, which require the use of a cable needle (CN) to create twisted, rope-like texture
- Decreases: The pattern uses ssk (slip, slip, knit) and P2togtbl (purl 2 together through the back loop) decreases for shaping
- Circular knitting: Construction uses circular needles, allowing for seamless or minimal-seam construction
- Stitch marker placement: Markers are used throughout to help track pattern repeats and shaping points
Stitches Used
The Weekend Pullover employs classic knitting stitches including stockinette stitch as the primary background stitch and cable stitches for decorative patterning. The pattern abbreviations include CF8 (cable front 8), which involves slipping stitches onto a cable needle and holding them to the front of the work. Additional decrease stitches such as ssk and P2togtbl are used for garment shaping.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This pattern requires worsted weight yarn in quantities ranging from 1200 yards for the smallest size (XS) to 2500 yards for the largest size (4X). The sample garment was knit using We are Knitters Petite Wool yarn. Knitters will need US #10.5 needles for the main fabric and US #10 needles (one size smaller) for ribbed sections. A 16" circular needle in US #10.5 is required for the neckline. Additional notions include stitch markers and a cable needle for working cable stitches.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needle size. The cable pattern gauge differs at 5 stitches per 1 inch, reflecting the tighter tension created by cable stitches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
