Product Description
I love the look of colorwork patterning, but I’m not always keen to work stranded Fair Isle. Mosaic Knitting is a fascinating “cheat” for colorwork: you only work one color at a time. It’s fun, easy, and requires no special skills at all!
If you aren’t confident about Fair Isle, or just want to try something different, this hat is an ideal project.
Pattern includes a tutorial on working Mosiac colorwork - as long you know how to knit in the round you're good to go!
Pattern doesn't use a full skein of the two colors, so it's great for using up leftovers.
The Mod Squad Mosaic Hat by Kate Atherley
What Is Being Made
The Mod Squad Mosaic Hat is a knitted adult hat featuring colorwork patterning in two colors. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished hat with a circumference of 20 inches (Small) or 22 inches (Large), with a depth of 8 or 9 inches respectively, though depth can be adjusted to personal preference. The hat is designed to fit best when chosen one to two inches smaller than the wearer's head circumference.
Techniques and Construction
Mosaic Knitting is the primary technique featured in this design. Mosaic knitting is a colorwork method that offers the visual appeal of traditional Fair Isle patterning without the complexity. Unlike stranded Fair Isle, which requires managing multiple colors simultaneously, mosaic knitting works with only one color at a time, making it an accessible alternative for knitters who find Fair Isle intimidating or simply wish to explore different colorwork approaches. The technique requires no special skills beyond basic knitting knowledge and produces striking visual results through strategic color placement and slipped stitches.
The hat is constructed in the round using circular needle techniques, beginning with a 16-inch circular needle and transitioning to double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the magic loop method for the crown closure.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs mosaic knitting stitches worked in the round. The gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches by 4 inches (10 cm by 10 cm) in the pattern stitch after blocking, providing a reference point for achieving proper fit and fabric density.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 2 skeins of Cascade 220 (100% wool; 220 yards per 100 gram skein). The sample uses color 8895 as the Main Color (MC) and color 8509 as the Contrast Color (CC).
- Needles: One 16-inch 5mm (US 8) circular needle for the main body, plus one set of 5mm (US 8) double-pointed needles or a long circular needle for magic loop method, used for the crown closure
- Notions: One stitch marker
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore colorwork techniques. The mosaic knitting method, while visually sophisticated, is designed to be approachable for those seeking to expand their technical repertoire beyond basic stockinette stitch projects.
