What Is Being Made
The Bellwether Cardigan is a highly versatile knitted cardigan pattern designed by Keya Kuhn. This pattern offers exceptional customization potential, with the ability to create approximately 182 different cardigan variations across 26 design options and 7 different sizes. The cardigan is suitable for knitters seeking a flexible, intermediate-level project that can be adapted to personal preferences and fit requirements.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked primarily using circular needles in the round. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques including stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch) for the main fabric and garter stitch for textured sections. The construction method uses interchangeable circular needle tips, which allows knitters to work seamlessly from the body through to the sleeves without breaking yarn. Optional double-pointed needles (DPNs) are available for those preferring traditional sleeve construction methods.
Stitches Used
The primary stitches employed in The Bellwether Cardigan include:
- Stocking stitch – the main fabric stitch, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance with a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches on US 7 needles (unblocked)
- Garter stitch – used for textured sections, worked at a gauge of 20 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches on US 7 needles (unblocked)
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Bellwether Cardigan is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile medium weight suitable for creating garments with excellent drape and structure. The pattern calls for Cedar Hill Farm Company's Squee DK yarn, which provides 246 yards per 100-gram skein. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from approximately 5 skeins for the smallest size up to 15 skeins for the largest size. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in the colorway Oscar.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:
- US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles – used as the primary needles for working the main fabric in stocking stitch; recommended in both 16-inch and 42 to 60-inch cable lengths
- US 6 (4 mm) circular needles – used for ribbed edgings and finishing; also recommended in 16-inch and 42 to 60-inch cable lengths
- US 6 (4 mm) and US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) – optional for knitters who prefer to work sleeves using traditional DPN methods rather than circular needles
Interchangeable needle tips are recommended for this project, as they provide flexibility in working different sections and allow for seamless transitions throughout the cardigan construction.
Difficulty Level
The Bellwether Cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction with multiple sizing options and design variations.
