Thalia Sweater by Maloraé Designs

What is Being Made

Thalia is a beginner-friendly knitted sweater designed by independent designer Maloraé Designs. This versatile top is available in nine sizes (0 through 8) and offers flexibility in sleeve length, with options for both short sleeves and long sleeves. The sweater features a classic construction with ribbed cuffs and hem, making it an excellent project for knitters new to garment construction.

Finished Measurements and Sizing

Thalia is designed with a recommended positive ease of approximately 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) for comfortable wear. The finished measurements vary across sizes:

  • Bust circumference: Ranges from 75 cm (29.5 inches) in size 0 to 150 cm (59 inches) in size 8
  • Upper arm circumference: Ranges from 28 cm (11 inches) to 45 cm (17.5 inches) depending on size
  • Length from underarm to hem: 41 cm (16 inches) across all sizes
  • Sleeve length from underarm to cuff: 40 cm (15.5 inches) across all sizes

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Thalia employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner knitters. The sweater features textured stitches as the primary stitch pattern for the body, creating visual interest while remaining accessible to newer knitters. Ribbing is used at the cuffs and hem, a classic technique that provides elasticity and a polished finish. The pattern also incorporates i-cord construction, a decorative and functional technique often used for edges or straps.

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations, including BO (bind off), which is fundamental to completing the sweater.

Yarn and Needle Requirements

Thalia is designed to be knit with fingering weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a delicate, refined fabric. Yarn requirements vary based on sleeve length and size:

  • Short sleeves: Approximately 625–1,245 meters (683–1,365 yards) depending on size
  • Long sleeves: Approximately 800–1,600 meters (875–1,750 yards) depending on size

The pattern requires three different needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the sweater:

  • 3.25 mm (US 3) needles for the body, worked in the textured stitch pattern
  • 2.75 mm (US 2) needles for ribbing at cuffs and hem, which uses smaller needles to create a tighter, more elastic fabric
  • 3.5 mm (US 4) needles for i-cord construction

Additional materials needed include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, as well as waste yarn for provisional cast-ons or holding stitches during construction.

Gauge and Blocking

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (approximately 61 stitches and 76 rows to 10 inches) when working the textured stitch pattern on 3.25 mm (US 3) needles after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements listed in the pattern, making a gauge swatch a crucial step before beginning the sweater.
