What is Being Made

The Textured Shawl is a luxurious wrap designed as a more-than-half-circle shaped shawl with a finished wingspan of 49 inches (125 cm) and height of 19.5 inches (50 cm). This cozy shawl combines softness and wearability, making it an ideal accessory for layering and warmth. The design is suitable for knitters of all skill levels, classified as a beginner-friendly project despite its elegant construction.

Techniques Used

The shawl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance and shape. The more-than-half-circle silhouette is formed through the strategic use of hidden increases, which allow the shawl to expand gradually from the cast-on edge while maintaining a clean, refined look. This increase method ensures seamless shaping without visible bumps or irregularities along the fabric surface.

The designer incorporates textural variation throughout the piece by alternating between different stitch patterns. Sections of garter stitch interrupt the plain stockinette base, creating visual and tactile interest while adding subtle dimension to the finished garment. This combination of stitch patterns prevents the shawl from appearing monotonous while remaining accessible to beginner knitters.

Stitches Used

• Stockinette stitch – forms the primary fabric base, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
• Garter stitch – used in strategic sections to add texture and visual contrast throughout the shawl
• M1 (Make 1) increase – executed by picking up the strand between stitches with the left needle from the front, then knitting it through the back loop, creating invisible increases that shape the shawl

Materials

This pattern calls for SweetGeorgia CashSilk Lace yarn in the colorway ginger. The yarn composition is 55% silk and 45% cashmere, providing an ultra-soft, luxurious fabric with excellent drape and comfort against the skin. Two skeins are required, with each skein weighing 50 grams and yielding 400 yards of yarn, totaling 800 yards for the completed shawl.

The pattern specifies a US 1½ (2.5 mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 cm) in length. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and blocking pins for finishing and shaping the completed shawl during the blocking process.
