Product Description
If you like this, but prefer fingerless mittens, check out my Fingerless Texels! Both patterns are also available in the Texel eBook.*
Texel is an island in the North Sea and the stitch patterns of these gloves remind me of the waves of the sea. Knit them in sea and beach colours, as shown here, or make it a colourful, abstract pattern. Why not use up all those little leftover bits of wool to make each row of waves a different colour?
The sizes are Women’s XS/S, Women’s M, Women’s L/Men’s S, Men’s M/L, for 17, 19, 20.5, 22.5cm (= 6⅝, 7⅜, 8⅛, 8⅞”) glove circumference above thumb, to fit hands of same size or larger. The stitch pattern stretches well to provide a good fit.
Two options are given for the cuff: a pretty scallop cuff with a loose fit, and a practical, snug fitting ribbed cuff.
The pattern is for fingering weight yarn.
Texel Gloves by Dagmar Mora
What is Being Made
Texel Gloves are a pair of knitted gloves inspired by the North Sea island of Texel. The design features decorative wave stitch patterns that evoke the movement and rhythm of ocean waves. These gloves are available in four sizes ranging from Women's XS/S through Men's M/L, with circumferences measuring 17cm to 22.5cm (6⅝ to 8⅞ inches) above the thumb. The gloves are designed to fit hands of the stated size or larger, and the stitch pattern provides excellent stretch for a comfortable, adaptable fit.
Techniques and Construction
Texel Gloves are constructed using circular knitting on double-pointed needles, a traditional technique that creates seamless, tubular garments ideal for fitted accessories like gloves. The pattern incorporates two distinct stitch techniques: stockinette stitch for the base fabric and a specialized wave stitch pattern for the decorative elements. The designer suggests using a ribbed cuff or scallop cuff option, allowing knitters to choose between a classic fitted edge or a more decorative, shaped opening.
The pattern encourages creative color work, suggesting that knitters can follow the sea and beach color scheme shown in the sample, create a colorful abstract pattern, or repurpose leftover yarn scraps by knitting each row of waves in a different color. This versatility makes the project suitable for stash-busting and personalization.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch forming the base fabric of the gloves
- Wave Stitch Pattern: A decorative stitch pattern that creates the visual wave motif inspired by ocean movement
- Ribbing: Used for the cuff edge to create elasticity and a finished appearance
- Scallop Stitch (optional): An alternative decorative cuff option providing a shaped, ornamental edge
Materials and Tools
Texel Gloves are knitted using fingering weight yarn, specifically 4-ply yarn such as Regia. The total yardage required is 100g (420m/460 yards) of main color yarn and 50g (210m/230 yards) of a contrasting second color. The two-color construction allows for striking color contrast in the wave pattern design.
Needles required include either one set or two sets of 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 2.25mm/US size 1, depending on whether knitters choose the ribbed cuff (one set) or scallop cuff (two sets) option.
Gauge and Sizing Information
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct glove fit. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch being worked:
- Stockinette Stitch Gauge: 32 stitches and 44 rows over 10x10cm (4x4 inches) using the larger needle size
- Wave Pattern Gauge: 32 stitches and 70 rows over 10x10cm (4x4 inches) using the larger needle size
The difference in row gauge between stockinette and the wave pattern reflects the density created by the decorative stitch work. Knitters should swatch both stitch patterns to ensure accurate gauge before beginning the project.
Difficulty Level
Texel Gloves are rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the basic techniques of circular knitting and stockinette stitch are fundamental, the wave stitch pattern and the precision required for well-fitting gloves place this project beyond beginner level. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques, reading stitch patterns, and managing multiple colors before attempting this design.
