Terho Colorwork Sweater by Susanna Winter

What Is Being Made

Terho is a comfortable, hip-length colorwork sweater featuring a round yoke decorated with oak leaves and hanging acorns. The design takes its name from the Finnish word for acorn, reflecting the nature-inspired motifs that define this knitted garment. This sweater is available in 9 sizes ranging from XS to 5X, making it accessible for a wide range of body measurements from 75 cm to 155 cm bust circumference (30" to 62").

Construction Method

Terho is worked in one piece from the top down using the seamless construction method. This approach allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and make adjustments to fit before completing the piece. The sweater features a round neckline embellished with an i-cord detail and incorporates short rows to lower the back yoke, ensuring a comfortable fit across the shoulders and upper back.

Design Features and Shaping

The body of the sweater can be knit with or without waist shaping, providing flexibility for a unisex fit or a more tailored silhouette depending on the knitter's preference. Two rows of acorns decorate the hem, adding visual interest to the lower edge. The sleeve cuffs and hip-length hem are finished with ribbing, which provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Colorwork: Charted instructions only are provided for the colorwork patterns, featuring oak leaves and acorns on the round yoke
  • I-cord: Applied to the round neckline for a refined edge finish
  • Short rows: Used to shape the back yoke for improved fit
  • Ribbing: Applied to sleeve cuffs and the hem for structure and recovery
  • Raglan shaping: Achieved through stitch markers placed at raglan lines and a unique beginning-of-round marker

Materials and Specifications

Terho is designed for DK-weight yarn, which is a lightweight to medium yarn suitable for garments with drape and definition. The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology, accommodating knitters who work with either measurement system. Essential notions include 5 stitch markers (4 raglan markers and one unique beginning-of-round marker), waste yarn or a safety pin for holding the i-cord during construction, and appropriate needles sized for DK-weight yarn.

Difficulty Level

Terho is classified as an advanced knitting project. This difficulty rating reflects the combination of techniques required: colorwork chart reading, seamless top-down construction, short-row shaping, and i-cord application. Knitters should be comfortable with these intermediate to advanced skills before beginning this project.
