Product Description

I love knitting both bottom up and top down sweaters. In this scenario I used these two constructions for the same garment, thus I could enjoy both methods at the same time! Tavila starts with a Provisional Cast-on at the lower part of the yoke and is worked bottom up toward the neckline.

After the last decrease round in the yoke, some short rows are added across the back of the neck, to raise it higher than the front for the proper fit of the garment. The live stitches are then picked up for the body and sleeves, and the sweater is worked top down. Apart from the short rows at the neck, the whole sweater is worked seamlessly in the round. The sweater is intended to be worn with approximately 7.5 cm / 3” positive ease at bust, however the sleeves are relatively skinny.

What is Being Made

The Tavila Sweater is a knitted pullover garment featuring a distinctive hybrid construction method. This design combines both bottom-up and top-down knitting techniques within a single sweater, allowing the crafter to experience both construction methods simultaneously while creating one cohesive finished piece.

Construction and Techniques

The Tavila Sweater employs an innovative hybrid construction approach that sets it apart from traditional sweater patterns. The garment begins with a Provisional Cast-on at the lower part of the yoke and is worked bottom-up toward the neckline. This unique method provides significant practical advantages for the knitter.

The yoke features shaping decreases that are worked from the bottom up toward the neck. A key benefit of this directional approach is that decreases are considerably less noticeable than increases would be, creating a more refined and polished appearance in the finished garment. Following the final decrease round in the yoke, short rows are incorporated into the pattern.

Since the body and sleeves are worked top-down as part of the hybrid construction, their lengths can be easily adjusted during the knitting process. This flexibility allows for straightforward modifications to ensure the sweater suits your individual body shape and proportions.

Stitch Details

The Tavila Sweater features an elegant cable pattern added to the yoke section. This cable work is designed to be easy-to-make, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters while adding significant visual interest and sophistication to the finished sweater.

Materials

This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn and requires appropriate needles for the yarn weight being used.

Difficulty Level

The Tavila Sweater is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. The hybrid construction method, cable pattern work, and shaping techniques make this an engaging knit that keeps the crafter actively involved throughout the project while remaining achievable for knitters with foundational skills.
