Knitted Bag Pattern Using Schachenmayr Tweed Deluxe – Free Downloadable PDF

This free downloadable PDF pattern from Schachenmayr provides full instructions for knitting a structured, textured handbag using Schachenmayr select Tweed Deluxe yarn. The finished bag is a charming everyday accessory with a rich cable-panel centre, checkerboard side panels, and I-cord handles, making it a rewarding project for knitters with intermediate experience.

About the Finished Bag

The completed bag measures approximately 16 cm wide, 22 cm tall, and 12 cm deep, making it a compact yet practical handbag. The design is worked in three separate knitted sections — a central panel and two side panels — which are then seamed together, with the lower portion of the centre panel forming the base of the bag. Two matching I-cord handles are attached to the inside of the cast-off edge. Optional decorative embellishments, including buttons and felt hearts, can be added to personalise the finished piece.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr select Tweed Deluxe, 150 g in Lila/Schwarz colourway (shade 07106). This is a chunky weight yarn worked double throughout the entire pattern.
  • Knitting needles: Milward single-pointed knitting needles in size 6–7 mm
  • Double-pointed needles (DPN): A set of 2 DPNs in size 6–7 mm for working the I-cord handles
  • Crochet hook: Size 5–6 mm for the finishing crochet edging
  • Optional embellishments: Decorative buttons (described as a portrait girl button and an owl button) and four felt hearts in Pea Green, Yellow, Lavender, and Black, all available from specialist craft retailers

Techniques Used

  • Knitting: This is primarily a knitting pattern. All sections are knitted flat, working back and forth in rows.
  • Double-strand knitting: Every section of the bag is worked holding two strands of yarn together throughout, which creates a firm, dense fabric well suited to a bag structure.
  • I-cord technique: The two handles are worked as I-cord using two double-pointed needles. Stitches are cast on, then — rather than turning the work — are slid back to the opposite end of the needle, the yarn is pulled firmly across the back, and the stitches are knitted again. This process is repeated to create a neat, tubular cord. The handles are periodically stretched lengthwise to ensure even tension and consistent dimensions.
  • Seaming and assembly: The side panels are sewn onto the centre panel, with the central approximately 12 cm of the centre panel folded to form the bag's base. The handles are sewn to the inside of the cast-off edge on both sides.
  • Crochet finishing: A single round of slip stitch (Kettmaschen) is crocheted around the upper bag opening using two strands of yarn, providing a neat and stable top edge.
  • Decorative finishing: Optional felt hearts are stitched together and then, along with the decorative buttons, sewn onto one side of the bag as shown in the pattern photograph.

Stitches Used

  • Cable pattern (Zopfmuster): Used for the centre panel, which is 36 stitches wide and approximately 56 cm tall. The cable pattern is worked from a chart; only right-side (RS) rows are shown in the chart, and wrong-side (WS) rows are worked by knitting stitches as they appear. The 12-row cable repeat is worked throughout. This classic cable technique involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create a raised, rope-like or braided texture on the fabric surface.
  • Checkerboard / basket stitch pattern (Kästchenmuster): Used for both side panels. This stitch alternates 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches, with the pattern offset by 2 rows on each repeat, creating a classic block or checkerboard texture. The gauge for this stitch is 12
