Tartan Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern by Debbie Bliss – Pattern Summary
This is a knitting pattern for a Tartan Tea Cosy, designed by Debbie Bliss and worked in Debbie Bliss Rialto DK yarn. The pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty and is available as a downloadable PDF. It produces a classic, colourful tea cosy with a bold tartan motif, making it a charming and practical addition to any kitchen or a thoughtful handmade gift.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a one-size tea cosy designed to fit a standard teapot. The completed cosy measures approximately 30cm (12 inches) wide and 26cm (10¼ inches) high. It is constructed in two matching knitted pieces — a back and a front — which are seamed together, and it features an internal lining made from cotton fabric and wadding/batting for insulation. The tartan colourwork design gives the cosy a striking, heritage-inspired appearance reminiscent of traditional Scottish tartan cloth.
Techniques Used
- Worked flat: Both the front and back pieces are knitted flat on a pair of straight needles, beginning with a knit row and working in rows throughout.
- Stranded colourwork: The tartan pattern is achieved using stranded knitting, where multiple yarn colours are carried across the wrong side of the work. Yarns not in use are woven across the wrong side to keep floats tidy and the fabric even.
- Seamed construction: The two knitted pieces are joined together by seaming, leaving the cast-on edges open at the bottom to allow the teapot handle and spout to pass through.
- Top shaping: The cosy is shaped at the top using paired decreases — specifically k2tog tbl and k2tog — worked on right-side rows, followed by casting off stitches at the beginning of successive rows to create the rounded top profile.
- Foldline hem: A dedicated foldline row is worked on the wrong side (knitted as a knit row to create a turning ridge), and the lower edge is folded to the wrong side and slip-stitched in place to form a neat hem.
- Lining construction: A paper template is made by tracing around the knitted piece and adding a seam allowance of 1.5cm (⅝ inch). Two pieces of cotton lining fabric and two pieces of wadding/batting are cut from this template and assembled to create an insulating inner lining for the cosy.
- Chart-based colourwork: The tartan pattern is worked from a colourwork chart, with all shaping also reflected on the chart. Written row-by-row shaping instructions are provided alongside the chart for ease of use.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch — knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows — throughout both pieces.
- K2tog (knit two together): A right-leaning decrease used during top shaping.
- K2tog tbl (knit two together through back loop): A left-leaning decrease used in tandem with k2tog to create symmetrical shaping at the top of the cosy.
- Cast off / bind off: Used to close the top of the cosy after the decrease rows are complete, and to cast off the remaining stitches at the very top.
