Tamoa Wrap by Melanie Mielinger

What Is Being Made

The Tamoa Wrap is a long, elegant knitted wrap or stola designed by Melanie Mielinger. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished piece measuring 230 centimeters in length and 22.5 centimeters in width, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The wrap features a two-color design worked in sport-weight yarn, combining white and lilac tones for a sophisticated aesthetic.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This wrap is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The project employs increases worked from the yarn, specifically left-leaning increases (m1l) and right-leaning increases (m1r), which are created by lifting the horizontal yarn between stitches onto the needle and working into it. These shaping techniques allow the wrap to expand gradually from a narrower starting point. The stitch pattern is worked primarily in garter stitch (kraus rechts), which creates a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges that look identical on both sides. Stitch slipping (1 M re abh) is also incorporated into the pattern, likely used for edge finishing or decorative detail.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (rechts)
  • Purl stitch (linke Masche)
  • Left-leaning increase from yarn (m1l)
  • Right-leaning increase from yarn (m1r)
  • Slipped stitch (1 M re abh)
  • Garter stitch as primary stitch pattern

Materials and Tools

The Tamoa Wrap is worked in Baby Merino by Drops, a 100% wool yarn in sport weight with a yardage of 175 meters per 50 grams. The project requires 3 skeins of white (Farbe A) and 2 skeins of lilac (Farbe B), totaling approximately 875 meters of yarn. Knitting is performed on 4 mm circular needles, which allow for the width of the wrap to be managed comfortably. Additional tools include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers (2 recommended) for tracking pattern repeats and increases, and optionally a row counter to keep track of progress through the pattern.

Gauge and Finishing Notes

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 39 rows over 10 centimeters when worked in garter stitch and measured after washing. However, the pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical for this project, as variations will result in a proportionally larger or smaller finished wrap and different yarn consumption. This flexibility makes the Tamoa Wrap an accommodating pattern for knitters who may not achieve precise gauge. The wrap is finished after blocking or washing to set the stitches and even out the garter stitch texture.
