Talk to the Paw Shawl by Casapinka
What Is Being Made
Talk to the Paw is an asymmetric rectangular shawl designed by Casapinka, a knitting pattern available as a downloadable PDF. This intermediate-level shawl features a finished size of 45 inches (114 cm) at the neck edge and 26 inches (65 cm) at the bind-off edge, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or draping. The design incorporates decorative paw print motifs that add visual interest and break up the flowing garter stitch sections throughout the piece.
Techniques and Design Elements
The shawl employs a rhythmic, meditative knitting approach centered around garter stitch as the primary structural element. The asymmetric rectangular construction creates a dynamic shape that differs from traditional triangular or crescent shawls. Paw print details are strategically placed along the side of the shawl, described by the designer as "stealth paw prints," adding a playful thematic element inspired by the designer's cats—Sharon from Security, Finn from Interpol, and Kit Kat.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the primary stitch throughout the shawl, creating a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges
- Stockinette stitch – used as the gauge reference for pattern tension and consistency
- Paw print motifs – integrated into the design to create visual breaks and thematic interest
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This shawl requires one skein of fingering weight yarn totaling 400 yards per 100 grams, or alternatively, five mini skeins of 80 yards each. The pattern was designed and is shown in Lady Dye 10th Anniversary Yarn Kits, which provide five coordinated mini-skeins for color work and variety. The yarn weight specifications indicate compatibility with both 3-ply and 4-ply yarns, offering flexibility for different yarn bases and textures.
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes depending on yarn ply:
- US 6/4.0 mm circular needle (24 inches/60 cm or longer) for plied yarns
- US 4/3.25 mm circular needle (24 inches/60 cm or longer) for single-ply yarn
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Knitters are advised to adjust needle size as needed to achieve the correct gauge. Circular needles are used despite the flat rectangular construction to accommodate the width of the shawl comfortably.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches equals 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch after blocking. Blocking is essential for this shawl to achieve the finished dimensions and to even out the garter stitch texture. Proper gauge is critical for ensuring the shawl reaches its intended finished size of 45 inches at the neck edge.
