Product Description
Originally inspired by the vibrant purple and green hues of my favorite flower, the double French lilac, this two-color shawl will work perfectly with your favorite color combination, too! Or try Syringa in a single color for a subtly elegant, textured statement. This triangular shawl is worked in one piece from the top down and features columns of slipped stitches and alternating stripes of stockinette and garter stitch. Fingering weight yarn is worked on a larger needle to enhance the drape of the shawl. The pattern includes two sizes for a smaller and larger shawl; the sample shown is the smaller size.
Syringa Shawl by Danielle Chalson
What is Being Made
The Syringa Shawl is a two-color triangular shawl designed by independent designer Danielle Chalson. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a versatile accessory available in two sizes: Small, which measures 51" wide along the top edge and 25½" deep at center back, and Large, which measures 55½" wide along the top edge and 30¼" deep at center back. The shawl is inspired by the vibrant purple and green hues of lilac flowers, though it can be worked in any preferred color combination or even in a single color for a subtly elegant, textured appearance.
Construction and Techniques
This triangular shawl is worked in one piece from the top down, making it an accessible intermediate-level knitting project. The design features columns of slipped stitches combined with alternating stripes of stockinette and garter stitch, creating visual interest and texture throughout the finished piece. The use of fingering-weight yarn on a larger needle than typically recommended for this yarn weight is an intentional design choice that enhances the drape of the shawl, resulting in a more fluid and elegant garment.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- Slipped stitches arranged in columns for textural definition
- Stockinette stitch sections
- Garter stitch sections
- Two-color stripes throughout the design
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Syringa Shawl is designed for fingering-weight yarn, with yardage requirements of 420 yards for the Small size and 600 yards for the Large size. Each size requires approximately 424 yards per 113 grams (4 ounces) of yarn in each of two colors, for a total of 840 yards (Small) or 1,200 yards (Large). The pattern is shown in the original colorway using Yarns Skinny Bugga in Color A: Tree Frog and Color B: Purple Soldier Fly. The recommended yarn composition is 80% merino, 10% nylon, and 10% cashmere, though any fingering-weight yarn will work for this project.
Tools Required
Knitters will need US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 32 inches or longer to accommodate the increasing width of the triangular shawl as it is worked from the top down.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns and color work techniques.
