Sweet Tea Shawl by Michelle Ferguson
What Is Being Made
The Sweet Tea Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl designed by Michelle Ferguson. This finished garment measures 54 inches across the top when completed and blocked, making it an ideal size for draping over the shoulders or wearing as a versatile accessory. The shawl is worked in a beginner-friendly construction method suitable for crocheters new to shawl patterns.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the crochet technique, a fiber arts method that creates fabric using a single hook and yarn. Crochet allows for flexible shaping and is well-suited to triangular shawl construction. The Sweet Tea Shawl employs a structured approach beginning with a magic circle foundation, which creates a centered starting point for the shawl's geometric design. The pattern progresses through rows of increases that gradually expand the fabric to its full 54-inch width.
Stitches Used
The Sweet Tea Shawl incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundational stitch used to create loops and establish the base of the pattern
- Double crochet (dc): A taller stitch that provides structure and drape to the finished shawl
- Cross double crochet (cdc): A decorative stitch created by skipping one stitch, working double crochets in the next two stitches, then working back into the skipped stitch. This creates a crossed effect worked over a total of three stitches and adds visual interest to the fabric
- Back loop only (BLO): A technique where the crochet hook enters only the back loop of a stitch rather than both loops, creating textured edges or specific fabric effects
Materials Required
The Sweet Tea Shawl requires 650 yards of sport weight yarn, classified as #2 weight on the yarn weight scale. Sport weight yarn is a lightweight option that creates delicate, drape-friendly fabric ideal for shawl construction. The project calls for a G size crochet hook (4.0mm), which is appropriately sized for working with sport weight yarn. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, a measuring tape for checking finished dimensions, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Pattern Details and Difficulty
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for crocheters who are new to shawl construction or those building their skills with intermediate stitch techniques. The pattern notes indicate that gauge is not necessary for this project, meaning crocheters do not need to create and measure a gauge swatch before beginning. The pattern includes a chart reference available on the final page for visual learners, alongside written instructions.
